Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Thoughts on the Switch's current 2018 Q1-Q2 lineup?

Looks better than most Qs during the Wii U's lifetime, and these are usually the quiet months for releases. Mario Tennis was unexpected.

Solid Wii U ports is a good way to pad the 1st half of the year. That being said, I'm beginning to wonder how many of these top WiiU games will still be exclusive in a year: https://youtu.be/6SUglODVdXw

True, but Switch can't live based on a few games - no matter how great.

Yeah, but the thing is less than a year old. I think people tend to be a bit hard on Nintendo. I get that ports and remasters aren't super exciting, but they're also kind of par for the course at this point. More than four years in, and something like half of PS4's best selling games are available on PS3 in some form. Persona 5 was one of my favorite PS4 games of last year, and even that has a competent and playable version on the PS3.

Switch had four bonafide smash-hits in 2017. Additionally, they launched two million seller new IPs. They did a good job getting evergreen third party games on the system quickly, like Stardew Valley, Minecraft, and Rocket League. Xenoblade 2 and Mario + Rabbids are solid games that round out the roster. Today's mini direct may not have been super exciting, but it deepens the bench on what is already a pretty strong lineup IMO.

Of course it is all about, "what have you done for me lately". We quickly forget that Prime 4 and Pokemon Switch were announced like half a year ago. And Bayonetta 3 was announced less than a month ago. Good stuff is coming.

Why is this being hard?
When Nintendo does a 2017-like line-up it's ok to praise, but when they fail to even live up to that, it's unfair? I don't really see how.
Nintendo knows what they have coming out; they decided to plan out their releases this way because.... well, they decided so.

If Switch had the library that PS4 (in other words, the 3rd party support) than things would be different.
But they don't have that kind of support - if they ever will. What that means is that ports, remasters, stand out even more than on other consoles. And that is a problem.

Bringing more games widens anyone's library, but it's every console that can brag of having a great, even amazing library.
And that also affects sales.

The question is not of great stuff is coming. The main problem is at what pace.

So, that's 5 months with pretty much nothing, right?
Those titles might be good for those who already have a console, but not sell it to new costumers.

Not a single system seller.

Nothing!? :D

Full portable Dark Souls Remaster and full portable DKTF will easily sell some consoles. And you dont need to have huge system seller in evre quarter, it's more point to continue momentum with good and interesting games until another strong system seller game arrives.

Than its good that Switch dont have only few strong and great games.

Not literally "nothing", obviously.

But for the Direct you spoke much about before, what did we get? Ports, remasters and Mario Tennis.
Overall, and if im not mistaken, Nintendo has, for the five first months, 2 minor games.

You said more than once that there wasn't a reason to fear... it was Nintendo and Switch was doing so great, no way they would drop the ball and repeat past mistakes (they were even focusing on a single platform).

But when you look at system sellers, 2018 isn't shaping up to be another 2017, does it?

I think Yoshi and Octopath are June titles. I'm pretty sure we will have a Direct on the anniversary of the Switch to talk about numbers, future updates, online features and bigger reveals.

Lucky we had a really good 2017 so it's not that bad for the first 5 months of the year but I expect a lot better for the rest of the year.

Looking at that lineup, it looks better than I originally thought.
Will be picking up Bayonetta 1 & 2, Kirby, and Tropical Freeze, at least.
But, still a little underwhelming that we didn't get at least ONE big new 1st party game, sorry Mario Tennis.

This is the flip side to getting so many last year I think. Zelda, Splatoon, Mario, and Mario Kart over a 9 month period is massive. And let's not forget that Nintendo put out a huge JRPG last month that literally zero people thought would make the 2017 launch window.

True, like I said in the other thread asking to Rate the direct, it was OK, I was just hoping for better.

Here, I'll refresh your memory. Wii U's first half of 2014:

February - Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
May - Mario Kart 8

I didn't make any noteworthy omissions in this list.

So two big new games vs no big new games. They desperately need Octopath and Fire Emblem for the first half of 2018, and then they need two more heavy hitters.

No they dont, there are plenty of mid tier games for first half of 2018. currently, and of course there will be more announcements for 1H of 2018.

Well you wrote nothing, there are currently some good mid tier games obviously.

Yeah, ports, remasters and new game, and they are enough to keep momentum of Switch until more or stronger games are announced, and will actually gave quite diversite to Switch library. Bayonetta 1 and 2, Dark Souls Remaster, DKTF and Hyrule Warriors Ultimate version are mid tier games not minor games. This was Mini Direct, not full Direct, and Nintendo don't have big announcements in Mini Direct, we will have more announcements for 1H of 2018, most likly we will have full Direct in around March similar like last year, and usualy shortly after Mini Direct we have normal Direct. Nintendo is definatly keeping some this year games for next Directs and E3 like they did last year also.

And I still say same thing, and they didnt drop ball and repeat past mistakes, they are keeping momentum with more games without any droughts, and with more announcements.

Nobady relly said that Switch in 2018. can have so many big system seller games like it had in 2017. but it can be quite strong regardles 2017. We yet need to see big Switch 2018. system seller games, my bet is still on 2 from Smash Bros, Animal Crossing and Pokemon, Retros game is also posible.

For a moment I thought I was going to buy a Switch game this semester... and it turned out that SNK Heroines was for PS4 too. Very disappointed by the lack of Fire Emblem or system update talk (maybe E3).

Meh. I'll buy Hyrule Warriors when it's cheap, because I never really put much time into my own copy of it on Wii U.
