Forums - General Discussion - Which Is A Bigger Threat To Humanity? Science Or Religion?

Both aren't a threat, it's humans who are and abuse those things.

Even if religion isn't as important anymore, it still shaped society and life on earth and forever will. Some day us young lads will understand that religion is about everything and in no way just some words old people like to cite ;)

Science is what makes weapons possible. No science, no advanced weaponry, no killing of masses.

Why are people act like wars were fought 99% of  the time because of religion. You need a lesson (or two) in human history.

Science is a tool.  It is the use of that tool that is dangerous.  Science for the sake of science is not dangerous.  It is the intention of who commissioned the scientific development that is dangerous.

And of course religion was not the cause of 99% of all wars and even most "holy wars" only use religion as a guise for political, power or resource gains. The danger factor is the willingness of the religious followers to accept war on the premise of religion.  Even today it is still an issue.  Bush said Gold told him to invade Iraq. That religious implication gave a lot of American enough validation to support the war....despite the war truly being about power and resources.

Yea, and religion for the sake of religion isnt dangerous either. Selective nonsense argumentation.

You really think Bush lil divine chit chat had a major impact on the readiness for war of the US american people? Lets take a look which of the following could be a reason on its own to go to war.

- biggest terror attack in human history/biggest non civil war losses on US american soil in an act of war

- Weapons of Mass Destruction

- God talks to Bush Jr., telling him to invade Iraq

2000 years prior Julius Caesar invaded Gaul. Without any kind of divine incitement, but under the same pretext. A premtive strike against a looming threat. Where the romans only suffered minor losses, the Gauls were slaughtered in the hundreds of thousands, historians speak of genocidal proportions. And what made it pissible? Science, the technological advantage the romans had over the gauls. Better armor, better weapons, a professional well trained army of soldiers and constructors.

Back to the here and now. What made a decisive victory over the iraqi army possible and drove the body count of iraqi civilians as high as it did? Religion?

And Science is the only reason we know that's happening and that we should try and stop it.

then science is also the only reason why this is happening.

Science is a method by which we can learn true things about the natural world. What is done with that information is a consequence of that knowledge but should not be blamed on that knowledge but rather the one that uses that knowledge poorly. The fact that we learned about nuclear bombs is not to blame for why two were actually dropped it is a consequence, the ones who physically dropped them and ordered that are to blame. Religions, on the other hand, are belief systems which dictate certain behavior and can thus specific religions can be blamed for certain actions if they are dictated by that religion's doctrine.

For which is a bigger threat, I would argue that humanity would not be humanity without the ability to learn true things about the natural world and develop technology which is science at its most basic. Normally I would say that's being a little too general for the term science but the OP has basically defined science as any technological advancement of any kind so it's fair.

...

I just want to crush my head on a wall after reading most comments here, arf.
Science is about knowledge, arf. Religion is about belief, arf. The biggest threat is the human on how he wants to use one of those, arf.

Both together.

A bunch of muslim terrorists with nukes.

An unholy mixing of the two is the greatest threat. Not many will strap a bomb to their ass and set it of in a suicide attack but they will and they do it galdly.

Member when religion and science didn't exist and we still lived in caves, arf? I member, arf.

religion or not you live your everyday life by those belief systems.. its called the law. you have to obey it.

theres no way religion is a threat these days..unless you live 800years in the past where everyone is slaughtering each other and think the messiah is coming.
