Does this really add up? Up by 72.9% sounds a lot more realistic.

Why? 173% is not insane or outrageous.

Not just the Switch is up though.

About DQXI, the 3DS version is on the list. It's on a Nintendo system, which is what was said.

Aren't the PS4 and 3DS versions different though

Same game but the 3DS has 3D on top and 16 bit on the bottom screen.

This is due to the Switch being the most powerful console on the market, correct?

172.9% is not that outrageous. Need to remember 70% of 2016 sales would be 3,412,773 using Famitsu's data for 2016 (a decrease YoY), 170% increase is 8,288,163 sold (an increase YoY). I think you may be understanding %'s incorrectly in this case.

This is all using Famitsu data as comparative to 2016 console sales which according to the link below sold a total of 4,875,390 game systems in 2016.

https://www.serkantoto.com/2017/01/06/size-of-japans-console-gaming-market/

Using just the information that Famitsu has provided, they believe the Switch by itself sold somewhere around 3.3 million or so in Japan alone in 2017. That is equal to 67% of 2016 total game systems (PS4, WiiU, XBO, 3DS, etc.) in Japan sold.

Using data from the charts forum. About 4.2 million "other" consoles have been sold in 2017.

1,935,247 PS4, 396,207 Vita, 14,644 XBO, 21,817 WiiU, 16,394 PS3, 1,827,131 3DS

Combining the 3.3 with the 4.2 equals 7.5 million estimated. Which is close-ish to the number of 173% increase (number is closer to 165% though based on what info I had gathered though it may be incorrect).

A 173% increase to a base value of 4.875m results in ~13.3m, so a 172.9% in unit sales can be ruled out. Either the provided increase by Famitsu is wrong or the comparison is revenue-based. I believe it's the latter.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV (360+PS3) would outsell SSBB. I was wrong.

IMO, its more likely the website that the OP linked from just phrased the title incorrectly.

The Famitsu website source is talking about hardware sale numbers and not revenue numbers.

edit: Yup you are correct. Looked at the source article to find where the information was gathered.

translated the part where the info is located

Ps4 did good too. Only 8th gen home console contributing to the market. Hopefully they do similar in 2018.

The numbers don't look like unit sales, plus you can't tally up hardware units and software units for any meaningful total. The numbers have to be revenue to make sense.

But you are correct, the author of the article made a mistake. Hardware is up 72.9%, software is up 3.8% and the total is up 30.8%.

yeah re-read my corrected post. I missed from the initial reading the part that detailed it was revenue based and not number of systems sold.

Seems like the author of the OP's link should have included if it was revenue or systems the information was based on.

I'm just going by the article's numbers. Maybe they will correct it.

You don't need to wait for them to adjust your thread to reflect the correct numbers. But that's your choice.

Understandable since the Switch is more fitting in Japan, but still good to see it doing so well~
