Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Japanese console market up 72.9% thanks to Switch

"Famitsu report that the domestic Japanese videogame market is up 72.9% in 2017 from 2016 for hardware and 3.8% in software thanks to the success of the Nintendo Switch which was the best selling dedicated game system for the year with 3,407,158 units sold."

That's very impressive for a market going supposedly mobile only (PS4 narrowly beat the 3DS too).

Also, the top 10 highest selling retail games are all on Nintendo platforms:

  1. Pokémon Ultra Sun Moon (3DS) 2,003,607
  2. Splatoon 2 (Switch) 1,752,096
  3. Dragon Quest XI: Sugisarishi Toki o Motomete (3DS) 1,744,603
  4. Monster Hunter XX (3DS) 1,684,991
  5. Dragon Quest XI: Sugisarishi Toki o Motomete (PS4) 1,336,180
  6. Super Mario Odyssey (Switch) 1,324,280
  7. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch) 1,103,744
  8. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch) 688,044
  9. Pokémon Sun Moon (3DS) 576,506
  10. Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS (3DS) 423,073

Looking at that list, Pokemon. Outside that list, MH (and I guess Yokai Watch?)

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

OP - not all games are from Nintendo. PS4 DQXI is there. duh. :P

Japan is really more of a handheld market now. With Switch hybrid setup, it is a win-win for them. And we know there could be more Switch iterations in the future and a single household could have more than 1 system compared to a home console. Lets wait and see how things would be in 2018. 2018 is the year Playstation would have a ton of great exclusives but I believe targeted more on western audiences, I still think it can get some good sales in Japan.

WiiU shrinked the hell out of it, so it's good that Switch is bringing people back in.

Then again it is half portable, so it's not like Japan is changing habits!

Not just the Switch is up though.

About DQXI, the 3DS version is on the list. It's on a Nintendo system, which is what was said.

That's good news, Japan has been a dreary market for at least half-a decade now! The Switch was always going to be big over there, the concept it tailor-made for Japan.

Wow so all of a sudden switch is a console?
Ooowkey.

Nintendo has always marketed it as a console you can take anywhere. Its not "all of a sudden"
