Forums - Microsoft Discussion - 2017 was solid year for Xbox One sales in spite of exclusvies.

VGC overtracks XB1 by quite a bit.
When EA accidentally revealed the actual figures last time by stating that PS4+XB1 have sold 79 million units:
https://www.gamebreakingnews.net/2017/05/ps4-and-xbox-one-combined-will-reach-105-million-units-sold-in-2017-according-to-electronic-arts/
At the same time Sony had revealed that PS4 had sold through 53.4 million units: https://www.forbes.com/sites/olliebarder/2017/01/05/the-ps4-has-now-sold-53-4-million-units-worldwide-with-6-2-million-sales-over-the-2016-holidays/#756123e7b415

Meaning XB1 at the end of 2016 had sold 79-53.4=25.6 million units. At the end of 2016 VGC has XB1 at 27.9 million!
So even if VGC tracked XB1 properly this year it's still over tracked by 2.3 million, but most likely it's over by a good 3-4 million over tracked.

Thanks for the links.

I can't see it coming anywhere near 360 sales. If X and Pro get support years after next gen consoles are released.  I do not think people would play would buy 1080P  and 720P console 4yrs from now.But that is the only way I can see it crossing 60million mark. This year PS4 and Switch will dominate. Their average is 8Million per year so I think they can keep that this year as well.

There’s a PlayStation Phone?

I love my X1X together with the Switch. Yes, it doesn´t have as many 1st party games as Sony or Nintendo and it annoys me that MS aren´t doing a better job getting games out there but it DOES have a huge amount of exclusive games on top of BC. And BC in itself has made this console one of my favorite ever, since the 4K resolution on some of these titles on X1X is simply astoundng and had brought new life to the games.

And I loom forward to Ori and the will of the wisps, a new Halo, Sea of thieves and Crackdown 3 so the horizon looks ok atleast :).

"Xbox" would make an incredible documentary one day.

Despite the enormous errors made with the Xbox One, the groundbreaking stuff Microsoft did with the 360 ensured that many of the more casual gamers would stick around. They were truly the first to make sure customers were invested in their ecosystem and it paid off then and down the road. It's still all that gets talked about at work and I've been told several times that I should get an Xbox One so I can play CoD or Battlefront with the rest of the staff.

Here’s my personal problem with the X1. To me so far, the console still doesn’t have that one stand out exclusive ppl will remember the console for in the years to follow. Everyone knows ps2 for several, ps1 for FF7, n64 for Mario 64, 360 for halo 3, Dreamcast for soul calibur, OG Xbox had halo and ninja gaiden etc. For the most part the One relies mostly on third parties as opposed to exclusives.

My favorite X1 game is probably still Forza 5 as it was my first X1 game and it looked amazing at launch. But you get my point right? So far I still don’t think X1 has that ONE game yet.

I think its incredibly difficult to make games that feel like ground breaking experiences because so much has been done already.

I don't think any modern games right now have the "wow factor" as the titles you've mentioned. That's probably because we've also become jaded and creating ground breaking experiences is difficult at this point.

Although, I do credit Sony for raising the bar on cinematic experiences in gaming. But from a gameplay perspective, I don't find their games particularly fresh either.

At launch I felt like Dead Rising 3 was the most impressive launch title because the assets, lighting, and other effects were very high quality for an open world game compared to what we had seen before. On top of that, there were many zombies in the city. It was dragged down by frame rate issues, 720p, poor AA, and pop in but it still felt like something well beyond last gen. Fun game as well, looks fantastic on PC and could benefit greatly from an X1X patch.

Forza 5 is an impressive looking game, still looks good thanks to high quality assets, visual polish and 60 fps. But it didn't feel like a far cry from Forza 4. I did play a lot of Forza 5 though because there wasn't much to play at launch and I had a lot of free time.

Halo 5 has better visuals than it gets credit for, I think the art direction was more of the problem and the effects were too ambitious for the hardware.

Halo 5's graphics are absolutely terrible.
The Art was the saving grace in my opinion, but even that had room for improvement in a multitude of areas.

Mr Puggsly said:

I mean Halo 5's lighting and performance is ahead of basically any other FPS on the console, at least more ambitious than the average 60 fps game. Doom and Battlefield 1 kinda look bland in some areas compared to Halo 5, but all of these games strengths and weaknesses in various places. Halo 5 being the only game that actually maintains 60 fps.

Doom and Battlefield 1 have far more effects happening on screen.
Doom is a massive step up in regards to particles and texturing.. And Battlefield 1's draw distance is significantly larger than Halo 5's.

Halo 5 being "60fps" though is a little disingenuous, many texture and sprite animations are only a paltry 10-15fps which look downright jarring... So if it couldn't hit and maintain 60fps with those cut corners, then it would truly be terrible.

Even the enhanced version of the game on Xbox One X still suffers from short object and shadow draw distance.

I think they could have made good on Halo 5's lacking campaign by simply making another ODST or Reach esque campaign using that engine. Because the gameplay in Halo 5 feels great, the campaign just left people wanting more. Never happened though, wasted potential.

Halo 5's campaign left allot to be desired, but I think the biggest gripe people had was how the campaign deviated from the advertising campaign and how it ended on a cliff hanger.
I would assume 343i would have learned from that for Halo 6... Halo 4's campaign was actually fairly decent, probably the best aspect of that particular release. - Not Halo 3 levels of standard, but great either way.

I have faith in the Xbox One being a viable platform, it's still successful and a very sustainable platform perfectly adequate to play all the popular games this gen.

2018 will be a great year in terms of first-party games for the Xbox, Sea of Thieves, State of Decay 2, Crackdown 3, Ashen, The Last Night and Forza Horizon 4 are all interesting games that do have the potential to be great if done right.

Can't wait for what they have to offer, especially the new Fable and Halo 6.

I am taking a wait and see approach.
Crackdown 3 has already taken a heap of criticism for it's visual presentation.
Sea of Thieves could be hit or miss (I am hoping it's amazing) as it's a RARE game.
And they are all on PC anyway...

The Xbox One *is* a viable platform, profits are being made.

Also keen to see how a Fable looks on current gen hardware, Fable 1 and 2 were some of my favorite games.

I don't know how Xbox can appeal to more people in other countries, but I'm simply saying if they can keep doing about 8 million annually they're in a good place.

I also believe putting Xbox games on PC is good idea because many gamers are not on consoles, including regions Xbox consoles are not popular. So if MS can't get them to buy the console, they can find additional sales on PC.

They need some must-have exclusive games... Something new, unique and different. Something like the sadly cancelled Scalebound.
Microsoft convinced me to buy the original Xbox with exclusives and that continued on with the 360.

If Microsoft wishes to appeal to Asian markets... They could simply appeal to Blizzard to make an exclusive AAA Xbox One game, then watch console sales pick up in those markets.

The initial disaster of X1 wasn't really that bad. They fixed the major issues prior to launch, the Kinect was removed to lower the price, and MS never made significant price cuts to stay competitive. So even though MS has a lot of money, they didn't do a lot to undercut PS4. Frankly, I don't believe MS was interested in losing money on Xbox. Regardless, the console has thrived fairly well, its a very relevant platform, and Xbox software is now used to prop up Windows Store.

Sadly, Microsoft still has to appeal to shareholders, they can't just endlessly throw dollar bills at a problem, they do have limits.

And you are correct, Microsoft did repair the largest issues prior to launch, the DRM, Kinect and Higher Price. - But... They still had less power, ResolutionGate was a real issue being pushed by various outlets.

Snoopy said:

Despite Microsoft mess ups at the begining of the generation, they could hit 360 sales when it all said and done is amazing. Next generation just don't mess up the messaging and keep the console competitively priced and you should do a lot better by default. Also, having Minecraft on xbox and not ps5 should help a lot.

Well. To be fair... The Xbox 360 had a ton of issues as well, namely the RROD which tarnished the brand... But despite that, still sold as well as it did.
The Playstation 3 released at a higher price and games often were worst than their Xbox 360 counterparts and sold well.

So, it's not outside of the realm of possibility that a console having a crap launch can still sell well.

Fable is still popular, the question is who's gonna continue it? Thus far its just rumors but its silly to think the IP is dead.

Even X1 remasters of the trilogy would be nice just to have the visuals cleaned up for modern consoles. They do well on PC as well given there is a RPG following there.

Fable 1 was already remastered with Fable: Anniversary. - I would not complain if they remastered all three again as titles taking full advantage of the Xbox One X. - Although, they would need to do some serious work to Fable 3 to make it a decent title.

Mr Puggsly said:

Anybody who thought X1X would turn things around completely should have just been ignored.

Agreed. We had the Playstation 4 as the precedent to go by.

The Xbox One X will help overall sales though, especially as it's a Halo product... Which means it's got the best visuals and that is being reflected in general trailers, advertising and marketing material, which should hopefully be noticed by consumers.

So...It looks like sales are going to be pretty much flat this year compared to the last two. Doesn't that also mean that BC, the One S, the One X, and nearly constant sales and deals have only managed to keep One sales stable? Is that good?

Stable sales are not a worst case scenario. Especially when its a pretty strong number. With stable sales it could surpass SNES and NES.

Look at it this way, Wii U was a disaster because its best year was 5 million, the launch year. While every year after was 3 - 3.5 million until it dropped like a rock in 2016.

So I do believe steady numbers would be a good position. If they wanna go up, its gonna take to some big software to accomplish that I suppose. At least the X1's price is already in a good place, I mean $199 with games is pretty amazing for its capabilities.

Oh of course not. Stable sales are far from the worst case scenario. But it looks to me like they might be running out of ways to bolster sales, which means if they start to slip they won't have a way to pull out of it. I'm of the belief that if a system wants to sell well consistently then they need to keep giving people new reasons to buy it. The same things that bolstered sales in 2017 aren't going to be as effective in 2018.

I'd argue that outside of exclusives, MS has done way more to make the One appealing than the PS4 over the last two years. BC, The One S and X being bigger upgrades than the Slim and Pro, pushing for cross platform play, frequent deals, gamepass and EA access, ect. Not many huge things on their own (except for the One S and the deals, I'd argue) but they add up to quite a bit, And yet this year the Xbox One will likely be up 5 or 6% from last year, while the PS4 will be up around 20% from last year. They've had to try really hard to keep sales stable, and I think they're running out of cards to play to keep sales stable.

I think there's a good chance that 2017 will be the Xbox One's best year, and I don't know if we'll see another year where the Xbox One sells better in one year than it did the year before. Unless they stop following traditional generations of course.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Yea, a pity how a platform holder can be relatively successful without providing quality content, without pushing the medium forward, trying to reduce the competition to a hardware arms race. On top of that laying the foundation for quantity over quality a la Steam and all its consequences.

60m is doable but optimistic. 80m is never going to happen.

Not sure if that's the right reference...the market was much smaller back then.

Outside of the US and UK/Australia XBox is virtually non-existent. That's where they need to work on if they want to become competitive again.

No it wasn't consoles are just available in a lot more country's now but in the biggest markets sales are actually pretty flat for the last couple of years.

So if you read my post again you'll see that's exactly what I said. Unless MS are content to be focused on those markets...which it certainly seems like sometimes. (X1 reveal)

In some regions I don't anticipate they will have much traction.

The UK is around 1/3 of X1 sales in Europe. So they must have SOME presence in other European countries. They've also sold about 4 million in the mysterious other region. So their sales overseas is a bit understated.

I don't know how Xbox can appeal to more people in other countries, but I'm simply saying if they can keep doing about 8 million annually they're in a good place.

Some presence meaning 1/4 to 1/8th or even less, compared to Sony in the rest of Europe, depending on country. During 360 times this ratio was definitely better.
