Forums - Microsoft Discussion - 2017 was solid year for Xbox One sales in spite of exclusvies.

VGChartz is tracking X1 at 7.4 million right now for 2017, will probably be around 8.5 - 9 million in the end.

So X1 got crushed by PS4 and Switch... but that's okay! Still a viable platform and it shows this console can still sell even with a modest year of exclusives. I'd argue games like Forza 7, Cuphead, and Halo Wars 2 is better than the credit given but I'm not gonna argue! This is a platform that also relies on strong 3rd party support and that allows it thrive.

The X1X helped change a perception by now making Xbox the place for generally superior ports. The disparity might not be massive, but its something to boast about and better than the perception before.

X1 BC is kinda downplayed but its a really awesome feature that I'm seeing discussed and used a lot. Even at retailers its not uncommon to see 360 games promoting X1 BC. Not sure if this is stimulating sales but it doesn't hurt. It has also been an easy way to add 4K content to the X1X.

Thanks to delays it looks like X1 gets a solid list of games to boast about like Sea of Thieves, State of Decay 2, and Crackdown 3. Ashen, Ori sequel, Last Night, etc. Safe to assume there will be a few things for holidays not announced yet. So in comparison it should be a good year of content.

I said it before and I'll say it again, if the X1 just maintains sales in the ballpark of 8 million then it will be viable. it happened in 2017 and I assume 2018 will be the same.

So PS4 will continue to crush, 2018 might be Sony's biggest year of exclusives. At best MS can get some PS4 owners to buy a X1 as well for exclusives, old and new. X1 was $189 in 2017, maybe they will go crazy and hit $149 in 2018.

Switch is no real threat in my opinion. Its never going to be the place where the core gamers are as it lacks many AAA experiences found on X1 and PS4.

So here's hoping X1 has strong 2018.

On a side note, I just noticed X1 flew past Genesis and N64 this year in total sales. If sales are steady it will take 2 years to pass SNES and 3 years to pass NES.

A positive Microsoft thread? Blasphemy!

X1 might be 3rd string this gen, but it'll still do well enough for itself, not as good as 360, but much better than original Xbox.

Not sure if that's the right reference...the market was much smaller back then.

Outside of the US and UK/Australia XBox is virtually non-existent. That's where they need to work on if they want to become competitive again.

PS2 is still the best selling system despite selling to that smaller market, which was smaller because the other consoles weren't very appealing. Plus the market being bigger now didn't keep the Wii U from becoming Nintendo's worst selling system ever. X1 is selling better than Xbox because it's the better system, that's all there is to it.

Sure if they care about competing on a WW scale, but maybe they're fine focusing on the territorys they sell best in. Idk I haven't been keeping up with Microsoft.

What? If your not winning, then it doesn't matter if you have a viable platform.

At least thats what people tell me about a PlayStation Phone and PlayStation Portable.

I agree with you though. XBO is doing well. I believe this gen is going to be just as long as last gen or longer, and when it is all said and done, I can see XBO selling roughly the same as the 360. I see both Sony and Microsoft trying to slam the door on devices like Amazon Fire TV, Roku, and Apple TV once they move to 7nm. We should see $99.99 PS4 Super Slim and XBOSS in 2019 or 2020, and that will help push the platforms into the furthest reaches of the market.

Microsoft is doing an awesome job building a solid platform with backwards comparability and Play Anywhere, they are making Xbox a very worth while product. These kinds of moves make it comfortable to jump into the platform at any time, and know you have access to games for years to come, and your entire library if you had a previous product.

I have faith that they will sort out there 1st party issues. They have a long way to go to compete with Sony and Nintendo, but as I opened with. You don't have to be winning/the market leader to be successful.

I have faith in the Xbox One being a viable platform, it's still successful and a very sustainable platform perfectly adequate to play all the popular games this gen.

2018 will be a great year in terms of first-party games for the Xbox, Sea of Thieves, State of Decay 2, Crackdown 3, Ashen, The Last Night and Forza Horizon 4 are all interesting games that do have the potential to be great if done right.

Can't wait for what they have to offer, especially the new Fable and Halo 6.

No it wasn't consoles are just available in a lot more country's now but in the biggest markets sales are actually pretty flat for the last couple of years.

Totally agree with this gen being just as long or even longer then last gen that is why they released the PS4 Pro and X1 X.

In some regions I don't anticipate they will have much traction.

The UK is around 1/3 of X1 sales in Europe. So they must have SOME presence in other European countries. They've also sold about 4 million in the mysterious other region. So their sales overseas is a bit understated.

I don't know how Xbox can appeal to more people in other countries, but I'm simply saying if they can keep doing about 8 million annually they're in a good place.

I also believe putting Xbox games on PC is good idea because many gamers are not on consoles, including regions Xbox consoles are not popular. So if MS can't get them to buy the console, they can find additional sales on PC.

I think MS will have pretty good year with Sea of Thieves, State of Decay 2(cant wait!) Crackdown 3 and Forza Horizon 4.

Ashen and The Last Night are hardly second party let alone first party, both published by annapurna and are timed exclusives(wouldnt surprise to see those titles this year on switch and ps4 as well, depends the release time on xbox one/PC).

They really need to take time on Halo 6 and release it 2019 to beef it up and make it as good as they can. Its to early for Fable, unless they really want some announcements for E3.
