Forums - Movies & TV - Is Jumanji becoming a silent hit?

It's a movie that basically has one joke ... the idea that popular actors like the Rock and Kevin Hart could be inhabited by insecure teenagers. Well really it's actually Jack Black who's channelling a teenage girl that steals the movie. But it basically does that well enough to be a crowd pleaser.

It is doing quite well now. $219m worldwide after 12 days on a $90m budget. I honestly expected it to be a flop, but it got decent reviews and is doing well at the box office. I might just go see it next weekend since I liked the original and like the cast of this reboot.

2nd weekend is most likely up over the first weekend because they released it too close to Star Wars.

Actually it did more than 320m worldwide in 12 days since the count of the week was made public not long ago. Probably around the time of your post. 500m is already a given to be reached in 2 weeks or so. Whether it can reach 600m, could still be possible. And on a 90m budget, 50 marketing, Sony keeping half of the gross it probably will make over a 100m in pure profit, not to forget income from any merchandise and home media down the line. Also besides all of this its a very fun movie on its own.

Although early success is quite encouraging but i m still not sold that it will do above $250m in the domestic market after $32m first week. I have seen many movies falling suddenly on the box office after some good early run. So its quite possible that Jumanji after doing 170m in first 9 days only do 30m in the next 90 days. especially how it manages after the holidays are over.

Well, considering its looking like it's going to be on par, if not beat its predecessor, even with inflation accounted for, I'd say yes.

Its a big budget movie staring kids movie staring The Rock, of course it was going to do well.

Seems like it is overperforming but unlike Mummy / Ghostbusters, its reveal was never met with dislike button warriors so I guess it was only a small vocal minority who were complaining about it (me included). I have no desire to see it.

I loved it. Whoever did the casting for the movie did a fantastic job, The Rock, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan are fantastic together.

Granted Jumanji was an mid-sized hit in the 90s. It was never Jurassic Park, Forrest Gump, Terminator 2, or even The Flintstones. It does get a nice boost from 90s nostalgia but not that much.

It is already at number 1 for Monday estimate.

I saw a trailer for this new Jumanji movie and I did not like it one bit. It has NOTHING to do with the original Jumanji, the gist of Jumanji is people sitting around a board and playing the game because the board is magic and not some video game as I saw in the Trailer. Then Dwayne Johnson, seriously? I don't want to see The Rock, I want to see ordinary people dealing with a magic board game because that's what Jumanji is all about.
Oh Robin Williams I do miss you.

Jack Black is most of the comedy in the movie. Kevin does his usual thing,  but Black takes it.

Yup, pretty much. Jack Black steals the movie and this movie is probably going to restart his career, or at least put him on the map again.

Him playing basically a 16-year-old Instagram queen overshadows everyone else in the film.

I saw it, went to book a ticket and it was completely sold out. Had to wait for the next session which was 90% sold out already, ended up with a crappy seat in the front corner. I have to say i really enjoyed it.
