Forums - Movies & TV - Disney's Star Wars $4 Billion Investment Has Already Paid For Itself

http://www.musictimes.com/articles/76395/20171230/star-wars-movies-make-4-billion-surpass-amount-disney-paid-to-buy-lucasfilm.htm

Disney paid $4 billion for Star Wars five years ago, this weekend The Last Jedi will combined with TFA and Rogue One have earned Disney just over $4 billion from movie ticket sales alone.

Mind you this doesn't include things like all the merchandising money, toys, Blu-Rays/DVDs, just box office tickets.

They made out like bandits with this deal. Lucas should have asked for $8 billion.

Half of that goes to theaters though, doesn't it?

It's closer to 35% actually. Theaters make their money from popcorn and soda.

Still that figure doesn't count toys, t-shirts, home video, etc. sales. Obviously they make several times more there.

Obviously. They could have sold bricks with the Star Wars logo on it and they would have made back the money by now.

Umm... you forgot to factor in the cost of making the movies and marketing them.

Which is dwarfed by the amount they make from toy sales alone. In reality factoring in total profit from TFA and Rogue One (meaning all merchandising and home video sales included), they probably eclipsed $4 billion in profit from those two films alone.

Everything from here on out is basically just printing them money.

Ps..... didnt the mouse just buy FOX? Disney really is a unstoppable juggernaut in the tv industry.

Honestly, Lucas could have asked for double and they'd still have paid it, simply because Star Wars is so big that there's absolutely no doubt whatsoever that it'll make money... the franchise literally prints money for whoever owns it, in this case it's Disney.

Lucas really sold for a low bar. Star Wars is worth way more than $4 billion dollars.

Okay, so it works like this: Disney buys Marvel, makes movies about Marvel. With that money, they buy Star Wars, and they make movies about Star Wars. With that money, they buy Fox. What will they buy with the money from Fox's properties?

You know it deserves the GOTY.
