Forums - Website Topics - Is this website becoming dangerous?

Yeah this site is garbage on mobile, constant “you won insert prize” pop ups that don’t allow me to look at the forum unless I close the window, then as soon as I click a thread again, within seconds the pop up happens again. This was nonstop and as of today I installed ad block and it’s been so awesome.

This is just a general note to everyone (I'm using your post as an example Playstation_awaiter, but this is not pointed solely at you):

I would really appreciate it, if you all wouldn't be so brazen about your use of ad-blocking software. Believe me, I totally understand why you guys feel the need to use it - I really do. Ads suck, they're annoying, and as I've mentioned several times in several threads, we have ZERO control over the content that's generated by them. And while I'm committed to working (at some point) on some of the placement and sizing in order to make the website a bit more functional in certain areas - we will have ads forever as it's the ONLY way to pay to keep this website running.

Nothing about running ANY website is "free" and if/when the day comes that Brett finds himself paying for a website that he's not even breaking even on, well don't be surprised to come here and see the lights have been turned off. And honestly, could you blame him??? As awesome as this community is, nobody in their right mind would fund a website that's losing money - if it were me, I would absolutely shut-down if I wasn't at least breaking even.

No - I'm not threatening to ban people for talking about ad-blockers and whatnot, but I really would appreciate it if you guys would just tone it back about openly posting about your use of them. Frankly, it's insulting and all it does is further encourage other users to block ads on the website until we reach a point of ZERO revenue - which is when Brett will surely power-down...  :(

Thanks everyone for your understanding.

The issue is that without it I litterally can’t look at the site. I get a constant pop up that I can’t close or hit return or refresh. I have to restart safari or make a new window, at which point the pop up appears within seconds of opening a thread.

Thanks for giving your valuable input and i totally understand and that is the reason i avoid using adblock. But as others have pointed out that the ad mania has gone a bit too far. I don't mind ad but they need to be well placed and reasonable. Right now the ad is over my VGChartz Buddy panel. Over the thread titles. I mean they are all over the place and it does not give a very professional look to the website. I hope the admins will consider these aspects too. Many people are getting turned off by these ads and site will lose its valuable users.

When you adjust the ads I'll remove adblock from the site. I almost got a virus a few times from accidentally clicking ads that blocked some posts so that's why I decided to use it.

For those that don't know, if you become a supporter you don't get ads anymore and it's minor compared to the price of a video game. I definitely recommend that over an ad blocker.

None of these annoying or dangerous ads ever happen to me on mobile. I only get normal ads, and they're always in the right place. No pop-ups, nothing that needs to be clicked away.

How come this isn't the same for everyone?

I remember back in the day you would get banned if you used Adblocker ok the site and admited it.
Now there is literally no choice! I had to get adblocker on my iPhone just because the adverts made it so hard to use this site!

There are sites that guilt trip the hell out of you for using adblockers, but they're putting you in a bad position and give you no choice. If you can't maintain a site with up and up ads that can keep your devices safe, then they're going to jeopardize their revenue, period.

Many ads are location and language dependent.  Just a guess, but ones outside of English probably are not caught and taken down as quickly.  I'm not even sure what's wrong with the OP as I can't read the ads and it sounds like from the message that the "dangerous" content was blocked anyways.  That said, I don't trust Mcafee, as it's been known to give more false positives for something it sees the first time than what it correctly identifies.

I’ve never used ad block, even when this site was spammed with ads by ads every ten seconds, still came back to read the forums and check the charts, I use an iPhone, right now, it’s a breeze to use, ads are where they normally would be, in a good size, and no more spammy ads.
