Forums - General Discussion - Fact: Celsius is better than Fahrenheit

You should really read about how the various temperature scales were "invented".

One is based on reproducible science (Celsius), the other is based on happenstance. There is no scientific reason at all to clinge to something completely unscientific as the Fahrenheit scale. Then again, there still are people that think the thumb of a long dead king is a good measure unit...

I know how they were invented and that it doesn't really matter.  One is set based on water temperature?  Okay.  Insert shrug here.  It's still an artificial scale where freezing is exactly 0 and boiling is exactly 100.

And those are 2 very good to know things, that have tons of applications in everyday life.

So what is your point Pokoko?

Which is nothing, really.  They are both points on a scale.

At least it wasn't a French king :p

In the end it's all arbitrary. Water does not have a standard boiling temperature. Basing meters on how big the planet happens to be. Even using the speed of light for measurements is tainted by the arbitrary length of our day, which isn't constant either. Then we have the kilogram based on an artifact.

It would be nice if there was a standard though. The weather here is in celcius, water and oven temperature in fahrenheit, height in feet, distance in meters, price for vergetables per pound, price for meat per kg, water in gallons, fuel in liters, Oh Canada!

its okay to think that Celcius is better than Fahrenheit, as long as you also accept that youre wrong

okay, jokes aside lets gets a bit more scientific. yes, with Celcius water boils at 100 and freezes at 0. that is because Celcius is a system based on water. Fahrenheit is a system based on human body temperature with 100 being our nomal temperature (later adjusted to 98.6 once we realized it wasnt 100% accurate.

but with Fahrenheit you get a much better range of temperatures. 32 and below is freezing. around 75 degrees is room temperature, and 90 to 100 is very hot.

whereas with Celcius, 0 and below is freezing, room temperature is around 22, and about 35 would be hot.

Celsius scale feels too small to me personally, Fahrenheit gives you more room without relying on decimals.

for what purpose though?

It's not like you could feel a 1 degree difference in Fahrenheit and even a 1 degree difference in Celsius is almost impossible to notice.

I almost never like to state my opinions as facts. However my one exception is Celsius being better than Fahrenheit. I mean, who could think the opposite?

Let's compare the basics. Celsius freezes at 0 and boils at 100. Fahrenheit freezes at 32 and boils at 212. Celsius is more logical.

Celsius doesn't do that, water does.

Well, while you're at it, measuring distance in body parts (feet) doesn't make much sense either.

Decimals are not used with Celcius. At least I've never once seen it in my life when looking up the weather (thousands of times) in newspapers, TV weather stations, online, etc.

Some are indeed using 0.5 intervals to more exactly determine temperature, but as I said before it's pointless since you can't feel the difference.

Decimals only make sense if you're a chemist or something like that.

Celcius is only good for science to me. If I want to actually feel what the temperature feels like the Fahrenheit is way better. So normal people use Fahrenheit and science people use Celcuis for projects.

Also I prefer the M/D/Y format because it mirrors how people speak in English. We say May 4th 2018 not 4th of May 2018. The latter is only said in different languages such as Spanish.

Celsius doesn't do that, water does.

Only when 101kn/m2 of pressure is applied to it though. Up high in the himalaya water boils at 90°C.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

I prefer Fahrenheit because the range is bigger and that's what I've got used to.

Try going to England once. I think you'll find people do indeed say 4th of May 2018 etc

Why would I go to Old America? We left that place for a reason! But yeah I get it. The M/D/Y thing is an American thing. I guess that's what happens when you live an ocean away from everybody
