Forums - General Discussion - Instead of Prison, Can we send people to farms for nonviolent crimes?

I know it sounds stupid, but this guy who harassed people online for $20 a person is getting 30 months in prison. How does that help me out? So I propose that we send guys who do nonviolent crimes down to a farm, lets say Georgia, where they pick blueberries for 8 hours everyday (off on Sundays) for $8 an hour. $5 an hour is taken away for inmate fees and they gain $3 an hour. They make over $4,000 a year and have money when they get out. At the same time I get cheap blueberries (or raspberries, blackberries, etc.) and no taxes to pay for these guys.

A lot of prisoners are already working in the US

Then there wouldn't be enough Private Prison bribes for Republican politicians.

Harassing people, threatening them to burn their house down, threatening their family, terrorizing a whole plane of people with a false bomb threat are non-violent crimes now which should be punished with blueberry picking?

This is called penal servitude and has existed for millennia, it is in fact a common punishment in the bible, sometimes incorrectly translated as slavery. I think it is a good idea for mid-range kind of crime, maybe with a reduction of the length of sentences.

Ha ha. Second. I mean, anal rape in prison is a bit of an overblown phenomenon, but still, WE CAN HOPE.

It's weird to have a story where the rapist is the good guy in it huh?

But yeah, these lizard squad guys deserve absolutely every minute of jail time they get, if not more, having zero respect for others on a global scale is a terrible crime as well as the financial damage they caused to online stores and sales of games and media. If your indie game came out on the weeks these jerks were "having fun" with online networks then it could have spelled disaster for indie studios.

What about the people who actually need jobs on farms to earn a living? Just put them out of work for some criminals? What about the cost of the guards to prevent them from just running away, you're going to need extra security since it would be much easier to escape from there than from an actual prison.

I do feel like prisoners should have to work to pay off their debt to society, but I don't think that farms are the answer. Needs to be a job in an enclosed space that's easy to guard, that is crappy enough normal civilians don't want to do it, the kind of job mainly illegal immigrants work, that's two birds with one stone.

The kind of jobs mainly illegal imigrants do?

Such as picking fruits and stuff at farms?

Either way, I can't imagine many of those type of repetetive, low skill jobs that will be remaining in 10-15 years either way.
