Not sure when I will get to Civil War, but here’s my intro just in case.

Civil War was the anti-Ultron for me. If Ultron demonstrated that the serialization of movies made it difficult to tell standalone stories, Civil War proved the experiment’s capacity for huge payoffs. The movie is so great because it exposes conflicts several years in the making — impossible without previous installments.

IT's not just you, but I'm still baffled that people can put ANY movies below The Incredible Hulk. After my recent rewatch, I was shocked to think it was even part of the MCU with how little joy and energy it had. It lacked any real stakes, any charisma, and had very poor character depth outside Emil Blonsky's quest for power. There was only one action scene I liked, and the rest of the movie was a slog.

On the other end of the spectrum, I'm still kinda shocked that reception for Age of Ultron was so low. Again, not just you (I seem to be in the minority), but I just don't understand the relatively low scores for that movie.

Can someone please tell me why people liked Hulk but didn't like Age of Ultron?

I was talking to a friend who saw Black Panther without seeing all the other MCU films (sacrilege!). She asked what she would have absolutely needed to see. I said “Well technically you would only need Captain America: Civil War got Black Panther. Problem is to understand Civil War, you need to see everything else”

I can only speak for myself as I rank Incredible Hulk two slots above Ultron (with Black Panther in the middle, all of which are 6/10). I thought the Incredible Hulk had a good story, a strong romance, great action (that devolves a little at the end) and the conflict between Banner and Ross over control of the Hulk was a basic story but was still strong enough to carry the film. For Ultron, I thought there were way too many subplots that gave the film a cluttered quality. Ultron deals with stronger themes but it does’t do more than tease them to set up the plot. I actually had a convo with Vek the other day where I laid out what I think would have been a stronger film. The problem is it would be less action oriented and you can’t have that in an Avengers film.

Well I didn't like either, but if you want explanations for opinions you're in the right thread. Just go back to people's reviews on each movie and you'll know. I always thought Ultron was underrated but after this latest rewatch I did start to notice some things that are just very wrong with it. I do know how you feel though, because you know, GotG Vol. 2 and all - and this is one that seems to get quite a lot of artificial criticism, some of which is already starting to show here -, but whatever, that's just other people's opinions and it is what it is I guess.

tl;dr people can suck sometimes.

If it makes a difference my wife loved both Guardians movies and she said that Vol. 2 was a even a little better than the first one.  I guess I wanted the plot of Vol. 2 to be "bigger" like the first movie, while she was very content to just have all of the "family" plot lines (e.g. Ego, Yondu, Nebula).

GotG2.

There was something about this one that as a fanboy irked me. The film itself was 'more of the same' the GotG formula. Nostalic music, colours and quirky characters. Drax was mostly pointless in this film with no real plot or progression. But even though it was more of the same, it was good. I enjoyed it a lot, it was entertaining.

8/10

Fanboy wise though, Why was Ego a man? Even when fighting near the end, he stayed a man instead of just killing everyone on him. Ego the Living planet was weak. The there is this Sovereign race... Him and Her were created by humans (Drax is human too but let's ignore that) to be the perfect beings. Visions stone is Adam's.

The bogging down is starting to irk me more than I'd like. GotG guise of Starlord is now the main one in the comics, a jokey idiot. But alas, there is an odd thing in Marvel, they try and make the characters seem like their Movie conterparts forgetting where those movies versions came from, but movie goers don't buy comics, so those changes are putting real readers off. This is turning into more of a gripe at Marvel/Disney and their comics so I'll stop.

Hmm, pie.

I'd like to do a ranking too (no order)

Captain America:The first Avenger
Captain America:The Winter Soldier

Avengers:Age of Ultron
Iron Man
Iron Man 3

Great
Guardians of the Galaxy

Good

Ant Man
Iron Man 2

Bad
Thor
Thor:The Dark World

Finally got around to Civil War.

For me, this is the best MCU movie and one of the five best superhero movies, alongside titles like Spider-Man 2, The Dark Knight, and Superman.

Pros:

+ The action. From the bone-crunching up-close-and-personal fights to the large-scale superhero showdowns, Civil War succeeds in delivering visually-coherent, masterfully-staged action sequences. Obviously, fans will flock toward the creative, fun, and funny airport skirmish, but the stairwell escape with Bucky and Cap is just as good -- just on a smaller scale and far more intimate.

+ The character development. Somehow, everyone gets something to do here (here's looking sideways at you Joss) and everyone fits into the overall script like a puzzle piece. Obviously Cap and Tony get the most meaty roles, but the sub-plots work well too -- particularly Wanda and Vision. Also, Black Panther has, arguably, more character development in his brief time on camera in Civil War than he does in his own movie. Back to Cap and Tony: their stuff is great, and through them the movie's central themes of loyalty and guilt shine through.

+ The humor. Don't expect to be laughing on the floor regularly like in Guardians or The Avengers, but do expect some great character humor. Whether it's Peter Parker being chatty during a fight, or Ant-Man cracking jokes, or Sam and Bucky proudly nodding their heads as Cap works up the courage to kiss Sharon -- there are a lot of laughs to be had.

+ The theming (is that a word?). This isn't just a brainless summer blockbuster. It's thoughtful about the real-world consequences of super-powered humans, and willing to explore the darker instincts and flaws of its heroes. Civil War is as much a story about moral and emotional conflict as it is physical conflict, and that's what allows it to transcend the genre.

Cons:

- The villain. Zemo is an effective villain, and his story adds more layers to the movie's central theme -- guilt -- but he's more of a plot device than a character.

- Two different climaxes. The airport scene, in any other movie, would be the high point, and the action would fall from there. In Civil War, we get a second climax in Siberia.

These are relatively minor flaws, as the combination of action, humor, and pathos on display in Civil War eclipses anything in the MCU so far.

9/10

2) Captain America: The Winter Soldier
3) Iron Man

GOOD
4) Guardians of the Galaxy
5) The Avengers
6) Iron Man 3

I somewhat enjoyed Doctor Strange when I first saw it. I loved the action and special effects, and the atypical finale. I didn’t like the pedestrian origin story or Cumberbatch’s dreadful American accent.

See you on the flip side...
