Forums - Website Topics - How do you feel about the current state of VGC? - A Survey

I think I joined back in 2007, I really love sales statistics so seeing a comprehensive database for video games intrigued me.

I'd say that my interest lessened for a while (2010-2014 or so?), but I never stopped visiting the site entirely.

I check VGC daily, mostly looking at the Hot Topics sidebar for forum threads.

I guess I'd say that the community used to be better, but that might just be because I was more active then, so it feels like it was. I was most active 2007-2009, when I worked here as a writer.

The site was in a bit of a decline for a while, so I'm very happy with the changes and fixes going on right now. #MakeVGChartzGreatAgain.

Around the Network

1. Sometime early 2013 as I recall. I actually would have joined earlier, as I tried to sign up multiple times throughout 2012, but for some reason the site kept refusing my email address or something. Anyway, I was actually never all that interested in the sales numbers themselves, I just liked how much discussion they generated among the community.

2. I'm not as into the general discussion on the forums lately by and large, but I tend to always check this site for gaming news if nothing else. Somebody is always posting about the latest happenings, especially Ryuu in the Xbox thread, so I never stay gone for too long. A lot of the actual forum chatter though...idk, maybe it's just cus I'm getting older, but a lot of what I read from people is just exasperating to the point where I simply don't really wish to engage with them. So often I'll catch myself starting to write a response to somebody/something, and then like halfway through it I'm just like "nah...not worth it."

3. Varies. Usually at least once a day though. As for which section, really I just check to see what's on the hot topics, and other than that I'll visit certain sports threads and the Xbox Empire.

4. I suppose I already answered this basically. I'd say it's poorer, but there's still quite a few people I like so it's not all bad.

5. The fact that there are currently changes/fixes/updates/etc is huge step up from a long period of neglect, so what's not to like about that.

6. Make Rol a mod already

When did you join the site, and what were your reasons for joining?
Feb 2015, was interested in console sales after lurking a bit and then I stumbled in Nintendom

How has your interest in VGChartz evolved as your time here has passed?
Don't really care about the numbers, and even if I did, wouldn't be able to see it soon.
Recovering from a burn-out phase still so I don't really bother with any drama or baits, only post here and there if I feel like it

How often do you frequent/check VGC? Which sections of the site do you visit most frequently?
Gamrconnect exclusively, don't bother with sales or articles. Check it daily, though I don't always log in

How do you feel about the community here? Is it better/poorer than when you first joined?
It's smaller than before, the quality is about the same

How do you feel about the current changes/fixes/updates being made on VGC?
Better than before

Now, this is mainly a thread of personal interest, rather than an official VGC survey. However, after having discussions with others I am wondering what the state of VGC is according to the community here, and thus I have a few questions that I'd like to ask:

  1. When did you join the site, and what were your reasons for joining?
  2. How has your interest in VGChartz evolved as your time here has passed?
  3. How often do you frequent/check VGC? Which sections of the site do you visit most frequently?

Thanks to all who post!! I'm curious to see what the results will be.

1. I can't be sure, but I think I joined to tell Squilliam to SHUT. UP.

2. I wasn't very active for several years, posting maybe around 50 times per annum for the first 5 or 6 years of membership. I've been much more active for the last 3 years.

3. It's absolutely my most frequented site on the internet now. I check in several times a day most days, although I do take a break, or am just to busy to do so on occasion. I just go to the front page, no filters.

4. I like the current group just fine. There are always people coming and going. I like everybody well enough, and as with everybody else, some more than others. I usually notice when people disappear,  use the site less, make fewer posts, ect. Especially those on my friends list.

5. I certainly appreciate the work going into maintaining and improving the site, and feel all recent work has only been positive.

6. onionberry left the site because her love for me was too powerful.

When did you join the site, and what were your reasons for joining?
To comment on the walls of games and then on articles... much later to post on the forums when it became apparent that the moderators here were fairly keen to keep the place from being a "youtube comments" section in terms of trolling being chastised rather than encouraged.

How has your interest in VGChartz evolved as your time here has passed?
As the attention moved away from sales numbers on here so has mine in the site, it is very clear over the last 2 years that the sales figures were far less important to the site owners as such I can't be excited about numbers on a site that isn't, if I went to youtube today and all the videos were not loading then I would hardly be expected to keep going there for my online video fill.

How often do you frequent/check VGC? Which sections of the site do you visit most frequently?

Daily at least 3-4 times, check the articles to see if people have posted any sales or interesting news which has come up in the gaming world, sometimes a glance at the numbers and check if there is NDP threads up to take a look at US numbers but as a person from EU then I'm not wholly interested in the buying habits of the Americans nor 2 month old date from here.
How do you feel about the community here? Is it better/poorer than when you first joined?

Community is okay in places, some members seem to have a free pass now from moderation as that is seen as "just how that user is" but it is boring at times that some members of VGchartz add nothing more to threads than sarcastic put downs of the news featured or other users but yeah... it's just passed off as "how they are" and others are recommended to ignore them rather than seek moderators to put them straight.
How do you feel about the current changes/fixes/updates being made on VGC?
Coming here on my mobile phone or a device which doesn't have antivirus is never an option for me, the adverts / popups are bordering on the same levels are proxy/download websites I use for pirated programs, as such I don't use the site on work PCs either because it just really is a shambles to allow some of the shit which has been allowed here in terms of advertising, some of the things which are being fixed are sort of good... for VGchartz, but to be getting a semi functional mobile version of the site in the final months of 2017 is absolutely massively out of date, it is the equivalent of discussing the 1080p features of a TV in 2017, sure... it's nice to see, but also it's 2017 and that should have happened 5 years ago.

Fill in any other information/thoughts/feedback/reception here

If I'm not mistaken the site owner for here doesn't give a rats about the place? He has no vision for the future? there seems to have been no direct feedback from him other than the site is a part of what pays some bills, if the site is or isn't profitable or if that changes at a point I feel as though the lack of importance of the site to the owner means he would have zero issues whatsoever in turning the lights off on the place if someone offered him a fiver to do so (I mean... if it was financially easier for him to do so) it's just hard to commit to a website which has a shaky present / future in the eyes of the owner. Again if youtube was a site which could disappear tomorrow, would you see content creators investing their time in it? of course not.

I don't mean to sound really down on the site, and this isn't meant to be overly critical of it, but I'm just being honest as to why I've not been as active here myself or why I don't think I've made a thread which more than 2 paragraphs of OP in the last year, simply put the owner hasn't interest in here and my interest goes in line with that.

Edit - Oh yeah seen it in another post above me, but those nation threads spawn nothing but segregation and absolutely create a them/us environment in the community here, they should be re-worked or removed.

1. Started lurking in...2013 maybe?

2. Interest slows down as Reddit’s niche gaming community grows

3. Go on a few times a week

4. Community is worse since I joined, and I could easily list out some users - I’d probably be on the list

5. I’m hoping it gets better. I enjoy this place and what it provides

6. Safe to say some users on here are better off being permabanned. Who? Not for me to say, but I for sure would be one

You seem pretty down on yourself. You feel you would be better off being permabanned? And that not only is the community is worse, but this in part because of you? Ha. One of my favorite posts in recent memory, just because it's so bizarre. See? You're not so bad.

1. 2014, boredom. I enjoyed following sales numbers, and thought it time to register and give my two cents.

2. It's gone from a passing interest to including a handful of the members in my daily life (Raven, quick: put on your House of El avatar!)

3. It's a daily ritual now, but I only ever browse the hot topics and articles. That said, I've filtered out Politics so I don't have to deal with the Trump Blues that many overly liberal members have.

4. Honestly, there are a few bad apples we could do without. Several toxic Nintendo members, several toxic Sony members, and one Microsoft liar.

5. Love it.

6. Moar charts plz

In all seriousness I think I'm one of several users who probably aren't for the best of VGChartz. Not a big deal to say it honestly.

Do I think I'm the worst? No, I'm positive there are worse. However, I do believe I put posts on here that probably won't be appealing to outsiders.

When did you join the site, and what were your reasons for joining?
Joined in November 2010. I liked the sales charts, and I also wanted to join another gaming community after 1up.com closed down.
How has your interest in VGChartz evolved as your time here has passed?
It was pretty high from signup to around 2012. After that, the forums got a bit more boring, but the turn of the generation changed that. I haven't been very active since 2015 or so, but that has more to do with being preoccupied with college and waning interest in gaming as a whole. It isn't VGC's fault. Over time I grew very interested in the Game DB.

How often do you frequent/check VGC? Which sections of the site do you visit most frequently?
Every day. I visit the Nintendo and MS forums most often, and as of yesterday the new Game DB.
How do you feel about the community here? Is it better/poorer than when you first joined?
Can't say much about the composition of the community as I'm not that active these days. I will say it leans heavier Nintendo than it used to. When I got here it was heavily Sony.
How do you feel about the current changes/fixes/updates being made on VGC?
Good. We needed a mobile site.

When did you join the site, and what were your reasons for joining?
2013, don't really remember.

How has your interest in VGChartz evolved as your time here has passed?
2014-2016 was the peak of my activity here and I met a lot of cool dudes during that time, I haven't been very active this year.

How often do you frequent/check VGC? Which sections of the site do you visit most frequently?
5-15 minutes, longer to curate my threads and read more interesting topics.

How do you feel about the community here? Is it better/poorer than when you first joined?
There's some good users left but there's overall a feeling of stagnation. Conversations and arguments all start feeling the same and there's a lack of interesting topics.

How do you feel about the current changes/fixes/updates being made on VGC?
I'm happy with them, it's nice that the site feels more usable now.
