When asked about "The Force Awakens," Lucas offered a back-handed compliment: "I think the fans are going to love it. It’s very much the kind of movie they’ve been looking for." Recently, he was reported to enjoy "The Last Jedi" quite a bit more, saying it was "beautifully made" and complimenting the director after screening it. 

Meanwhile, much of the fanbase is up in arms that "The Last Jedi" doesn't "feel like a Star Wars film" - a gripe that was common of the prequel trilogy. After sitting through "The Force Awakens" in 2015, I was surprised to find that my appreciation of the prequel films actually deepened. "TFA" was stronger from a mechanical standpoint, but added little to the SW Universe. 

I'll be the first to admit that "The Last Jedi" is flawed in a number of ways, but I was overjoyed at the amount of new ground that was broken in the film. It seems that the old adage is right that general audiences don't want anything new of sequels, they just want the same "feeling" the got from the first film to be repackaged. 

What are your thoughts? Am I crazy, or might have old George spoke the truth about the SW fanbase?

In all seriousness, everybody wanted something new from previous star war (TFA biggest complaint and my as well). They get something that is completely different from previous star wars, but it expands on the universe as well. Now fans are now pissed off. I'm glad personally they didn't go with the cliches such as Rey dad being Luke.

That's interesting. I like GotG Vol. 2 as well. Will be watching The Last Jedi with my brother tomorrow!

I have only seen TFA as well as the Lucas Star Wars movies and I was disappointed with TSA. I felt it was essentially a carbon copy of IV and offered very little to the universe, only really to make another movie. I know I'm in the minority and that the masses really loved the film though. I feel that the hardcore Star Wars fans really don't want anything too radical but keep wanting more Star Wars films. Seeing this thread though makes me actually want to go see The Last Jedi...

It has too many plot holes and it shatters SW canon. It's the perfect little cashcow for disney and the fans who don't care if it makes any sense or follows canon. After these recent movies, I'm better off just ignoring the series altogether until disney sells the IP.

"Fans", in situations like this, typically refers to millions of individuals. Of course there will be differences of opinion as more layers are added. That should go without saying.

This is especially true when continuation is splintered.

Final Fantasy, for instance. Square decided that they would do different things with subsequent releases. That will inevitably cause a divergence of opinion, as different people pick different games in the series as their favorites and least favorites.

It's natural and completely predictable.

Hated the Finn storyline, didn't make sense to me but I loved the Rey/Luke and Ben part overall it was a very enjoyable movie with some flaws.

Felt like star wars just not the corny 70s type, thank god nor the turd fest of the prequels.

It's a movie, fantasy. people need to just enjoy them not get hung up on is it perfectly cannon or not.
