Forums - Sony Discussion - Right, do we think a PS4 Portable is coming?

It just isn't affordable I'm afraid. Making a console as powerful as the PS4 portable is currently impossible I believe, lest you be carrying an unsightly tombstone around the metro. Not to mention it's battery probably being terrible.

Above all else, I don't know how Sony would compete with the Switch. No portable has ever been able to keep up with Nintendos. It's also hard to trust Sony in a situation like this - time and again they make moves with other Playstation devices and while support is good at first, they always end up abandoning them.

Sony's in a better place than they have been in years but I don't think they're ready to gamble again. Stick to the guaranteed money, if you ask me.

There aren't any mainstream portables with x86 architecture, so no.

Unless an X86 can be shrunk down quite small, made heat efficient and battery efficient, it's going to be tough to get a mobile PS4 created with current technology.

Scrapping everything and going ARM would be a step backwards in many ways.

Best you're going to get in the mobile space is Apple's A11, and they won't be licensing their design to Sony, but even then kiss backwards compatibility goodbye.

No. Unless you want a $500 portable ps4 in 3 years that is a good bit larger than the switch making it not very portable and has about two hours battery life. Sony is out of portables. Nintendo has and always will dominate the portable market.

The Switch isn't exactly "portable" sized, either.

My goodness, no. Sony has already attempted to compete with Nintendo with the portable gaming market and failed twice, with their recent attempt being blown away. The Vita was the vastly superior system to the 3DS in terms of specs, performance, etc. It failed miserably. Portable gamers just aren't interested in high specification systems like the home console gamers are.

Sony should just continue to pour their money into dominating more and more of the home console market. Leave the portable market to cellphones, tablets, and the 3DS/Switch.

Yes but you can at least get a carrying case about the size of a Diabetes kit where a portable PS4...you need something the size of a PS4 for it to really be possible at the moment and the battery life would be closer to 17 minutes.

It easily fits in the inside pockets of my jacket and ain't thicker than my 3DS XL. So for the majority of each year I don't even need a small carrying case, only in the summer.

That's portable and pocketable enough for me.

No. The technology isn't there yet to do so. There would need to be a significant die shrink to get the PS4's existing APU into a portable form factor that isn't a massive power hog. There also isn't a mobile chipset that has the power to match the PS4 currently. Maybe Nvidia could come up with something soon but they seem to be in bed with Nintendo at the moment. Intel/AMD has a partnership on mobile chipset that could potentially bare fruit down the line but nothing that would do the job in the next couple of years. Also Intel, unless they have a change in philosophy, hasn't seemed to keen on providing ships for game consoles. I don't see a route for Sony to get a powerful enough chipset and cost effective chipset for theoretical PS4 Portable. Maybe with significant investment, but I t don't hink they'll be willing to do that.

Not even possible yet thing would melt or explode. Also i dont think Sony really have a desire to burn more money chasing after portable Market.
