Forums - Movies & TV - You going to see Star Wars: The Last Jedi this weekend? How was it? 220 million first weekend domestic, more than entire Justice League run

I just saw it and gosh. I don't know what to say. I liked it more than The Force Awakens but damn... They shit the bed with this one. I can't really say much about what was wrong without spoiling it, but it single handedly betrays a lot of what Star Wars is all about. Furthermore it's not much of a sequel to TFA or even really fits with the rest of the saga. People are right about Snoke being underdeveloped. In fact his character holds no meaning to this trilogy at all. He's more or less a plot device to drive Kylo Ren. Speaking of plot... The Last Jedi has a plot but offers little in terms of story and narrative. It's very inconsistent and drops a lot of plot points. For example the Knights of Ren have been dropped entirely from the series.

Something I find interesting is that there was a plot script that was released last year for the film. A number of things were correct. The title being "The Last Jedi", a new character named "Captain Canady", a Casino planet, and major epic space battles along with Poe being a star of them. That being said the plot was changed drastically for being too ambitious, too big in terms of scope and vision, and potentially too much risk in terms of plot twists. It's a lot more "Rain Johnson" than what we got. The script is much more consistent with TFA, includes the Knights of Ren which played a major role, and Snoke was a huge character and consistent with the books. The narrative over all was amazing and one of the best in the series. I really wished I knew what went wrong with this films production. It's clear from watching it that Disney really backed down on their grand vision for this trilogy. I still got a copy of the script if anyone really wants it.

If anyone has any questions, I'll answer them with spoiler tags.

oh that sounds interesting, those casino scenes and poes cringy lines in the beginning were bad imo

P.S. could you link  or dm the script?

Alright I'll just post it here rather than PMing it to everyone. Someone will just share it anyways. I believe the script was leaked on January 26th, 2017. It's an earlier script so the movie we got was already being filmed. No idea what the motivation of the leaker was but I'm damn glad I saved a PDF of that script after watching the movie. It's amazing how this script was so much better than the final version. Seeing how many set pieces and characters were cut is crazy. The script was running a little on the long side as well. Much darker, and very serious in tone minus a few hilarious moments. Dropping the plot point of the Knights of Ren alone changes the out come of so many things. Rey suddenly feels less needed and Snoke less relevant. Far less character development for Kylo Ren, which was drastic in this script. It was technically his film in many ways.

I recommend people read the whole thing. The pay off is pretty great a the end. There's no Crait but there is are major deaths that would have left some fans salty.... oh wait.... Nothing remotely on the scale of what we had. It fit quite well in the Star Wars universe as well as leaving fans with something huge to look forward to in Episode IX. I do wonder if Luke will play a similar role in Episode IX in trying to guide Ben and teach him as a force ghost or even connect to him directly with him.

I'll admit when this script was first released I was on the fence of it and concluded it was fake due to a few parts. Then I noticed certain elements and similarities in the final film and shit that really seemed out of place for Star Wars last night. They had something fans deserved, but gave us something to make a quick buck instead while keeping a smaller budget and a strict timeline. This is very depressing.....

Thought it wasn't that great. Felt like this movie was family/kid friendly. Just felt childish to me. Thought rogue one was a much better, darker more action adult movie than the last Jedi.

Of course. I'd love to hear what people think about the differences between the two.

I'm on reddit and my mind is completely blown by some of the stuff people are saying. Some people legitimately believe Snoke is alive and well and that he's Darth Plagueis and he's just going to regenerate himself. Just wow. Though now that I think about it.... Didn't Hux try to touch Snoke and Kylo says not to and he backs off? What if he was an illusion like what Luke did? I don't know.... Unless it can serve as a final test. Though after watching The Last Jedi I'm not sure if we should be over thinking things. Disney is really pushing for simple stories that a 6 year old can figure out. Nothing plot twisty, nothing complicated. Simple stories sell the best.

lol. TLJ is the riskiest blockbuster type film ever. (to be fair that term only applies the past 25 years or so). And you can see why it was risky. You have diehard fans crying and running to RT to post their bad review to show Disney how serious they are.

Will the risk be worth it? We will see. To me it might be the best star wars movie ever. The key is I went into it with an open mind. I can easily see how someone who had been theory crafting the past few years might be in meltdown mode. This movie just took a huge crap on their little theories.

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

Fun movie, highly entertaining.

As a long time Star Wars Fan I really enjoyed it. I go to movies to be entertained and really love sharing these experiences with my children. It makes them special. We seem to have forgetten the magic as we get older and grumpier.

People love to hate and complain about everything these days. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but I learned a long time ago to just enjoy cinema for what it is, entertainment.

I stopped trying to be a critic a long time ago and look for the fun in every movie. My kids loved it and I thought it was well made & enjoyable.

Seems people are split down the middle. Critics and reviews are positive, but fans are either enjoying/loving it or the exact opposite. To each there own.

It will make gobbs of cash for sure!

I just got back from watching it, I didnt really rate it. I would give it a 4/10 and it would rank as follows (best to worst) for me

1) Return of the Jedi

2) Empire Strikes back

3) A New Hope

4) Rogue One

5) Force Awakens

6) the Last Jedi

7) Revenge of the Sith

8) Attack of the Clones

9) THe Phantom Menace

Also, how did reviewers find this so good? I really don't understand...The Kylo Ren arc is pretty decent, I guess, but other than that - huge plot holes, inconsistent character development, below-average acting, forced humor... Ugh. It was so bad.

SO much this, I cant fathom how it got such high reviews either.

Also the comedy seemed very forced and didnt work, TFA got a couple of laughs from me. But why do they feel the need to add comedy elements anyway? I dont remember there being much in the previous episodes I-VI

I think ultimately, all other things aside, the worst thing about this movie is that it leaves things pretty much exactly where they started, and it really drove home the point that Star Wars is never going to end. I mean sure, it's somewhat expected that cash cows will get milked for all they're worth, and I suppose as long as the product is good, that's fine, but this just had me like.....ya......this is never ever going away. Great stories have a beginning, middle, and end. This movie, and the main Star Wars franchise moving forward, has a beginning, middle, and then cycles back around to an alternate beginning. Everyone might not pick up on this right away, but I suspect it will get real old real quick for many.

I'd say it's even worst than that. Say what you want about TFA, it did set up some interesting story arcs for future films and you had the impression it was crafted as the start of a new trilogy. TLJ takes those story arcs and closes them (in an unsatisfactory manner) leaving so little to look forward to when Episode IX arrives.
