Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Switch Sells 10 Million Units Worldwide

Good for Nintendo, but not good for those who care to have better hardware. If one can expect flaws in one's system of choice to be improved on the next time they release new hardware cause they want to keep motivation of people to buy it, well Nintendo does not have to worry about that. Why improve hardware, just create new concepts (which is fine, don't get me wrong on that) Why improve current flaws? People are going to buy the machine anyways.
Examples: Why better battery life? 3 Hours for games like Zelda is fine, people buy it regardless, Why choosing better CPU's and GPU's. The Tegra 1 chip chosen was already outdated by the Tegra 2 chip when the Switch was released. But Nintendo still went for the inferior Tegra 1 and did that stop the sales? Nope. Why making a home system, a dedicated one I mean? People don't seem to care about that, they seem to think some kind of cross system is the same as an actual home system. About chatting, everybody including some Nintendo fans agree that their solution to chat in online play using cables and a smart phone, is bad, really bad but does that stop the system from selling? Nope, so why even bothering to implement a simple chatting system as you see on PC/PS4/Xbox? No reason since people buy it anyway. Ok then at least this hardware means a cheap retail price? Nope, it's as expensive if not more expensive than other systems that are way more powerful like the PS4...

Bottom line is that the only true winner here is Nintendo, fans not so much and hardcore gamers, not at all.
Too bad cause I would have loved to one day explore the realms of BOTW or play Mario in his Odyssey or play that 4th episode of Metroid Prime as I really enjoyed the first 3 episodes back when I had a GameCube and later on a Wii. My hopes so far were that one day Nintendo would make better hardware that would bring their games to modern day graphics but Why would they do that? What motivation for them to do that? There's always a slim chance that they do cause no one can tell for sure what will be done in 5 or 10 years from now but the chance is small really small...

This is an honest post and I respect you for that. But your fear is totally unfounded.

Switch proves concept, software and wow factor drive sales. Sure, a better battery life and social features are very welcome, and they might just come with a revision. But I can't see how you can complain about the Switch's power. The PS4 was just as underpowered at release as the Switch. If you really are all about better hardware and graphics I can't imagine you being happy with the grossly underpowered PS4.

Most Switch (and PS4) games look incredible. Cutting edge power isn't really an argument these days, they probably never were with consoles.

Why does this news hurt you so much?

It does not hurt me it saddens me. And I explained why. Cause it will totally kill any motivation for Nintendo to significantly improve the hardware.

Don't take it personally, I only mean what I say from my point of view. I am expecting to play some Nintendo games one day, but these news make me realize that I may never do that cause I don't see motivation over at Nintendo to create more suitable hardware.

Again from my perspective. If you enjoy the Switch, good for you pal, that's fine and I have nothing against that. I just need to understand that I may never play some games I would have loved to, that's all.

There's still hope. Maybe one day you'll see the light and realize hardware doesn't matter all that much and then you'll laugh at your old self for passing on great game experiences for such flimsy reasons.

It is going to outsell WiiU's first year no problem. The question is if it will outsell PS4's first year.

Wii U's first year ended at 3.9m so Switch outsold it a long time ago. I've checked and Wii U passed 10m units on August 1st 2015 so 2 year and 9 months after launch.

Ah damn, worded it wrong. I meant outsell WiiU's LT first year no problem.

I had a feeling that might be what you were really meaning to say because passing the Wii U's first year isn't that much of an accomplishment

I always being told im not a hardcore gamer, but being called not a fan is new.

I'm not sure where my 100 hours in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 puts me now though.

First I did not call you anything my friend, you may be any kind of gamer, I don't know you and thus I did not call you anything.

Second, what do you mean being called not a fan? If anything I would call people that buy systems regardless of any criticism total fans. I'm a fan too of the PS4 but not as much as you seem to be a fan of the Switch. If the future PS5 does not improve on the current PS4 flaws, I may very well end up not getting a PS5. So don't worry you are a fan, more than me probably.

As for Xenoblade Chronicles and you spending 100 hours on it, not sure what that has to do with anything? I never said one cannot spend an amount of hours in a game on the Switch, why couldn't you spend 100 hours in that game? My rant was on hardware not on time spent in software.

And again the Switch has qualities, I'm not saying it does not, biggest quality is the games like BOTW, Mario, Metroid Prime 4 and of course as you reminded me, Xenoblade chronicles.

Some people are actually trying to find a negative with 10 million sold in the first 9 months without a Christmas?

Does a successful Nintendo hurt you psychologically that much?

People are talking about what the sales mean and how it looks like it's going to sell in the future.

Maybe contribute to the discussion instead of just hurling shit at the people who are?

OP: That's very impressive. It is nice to see Nintendo doing so well, and admittedly, better than I had initially anticipated.

As for the PS4 comparison, it should pass the PS4 launch aligned very soon. Though obviously it won't hold in to that lead due to the misaligned launches.

Oh, and interesting bit of info regarding this comparison. The week ending 12/30 for the Switch is the week Destiny launched on the PS4. It sold 600k units that week.

Whenever the switch has positive news, people who have different opinions are "bothered and hurt" by its sales but oddly enough, he is absent from threads like November 2017 NPD or the PS4 hitting 70.6 million.  Why not extend same statement when people are bothered by the PS4's continued success?

Yes, most people are talking what the sales mean. Except a few who are absolutely desperate to spin it negatively because the notion of a successful Nintendo product damages their fragile ego and console allegiance.  They cling to sales superiority to make themselves feel superior because the enjoyment of the product alone is not enough to make them feel good about their console of choice.

I think you're taking things a bit far, if you don't agree with what someone is saying quote them and say why. xD

It's also the most powerful portable gaming device which means they have improved significantly as hardware have gone, it even runs PS4 games like Doom on the go how is this a bad thing for consumers.

First of all you have 2 other stationary systems + PC to choose from if all you want is power. Secondly, how are people that like portable systems not winning here; are you implying that we are not important and ought to be ignored and Nintendo should just copy what Sony and MS are doing with better specs (why do that when Sony and MS are already catering to stationary game fans)? Third, I can also complain about why the PS4 used Jaguar cores and why it included a mid-range GPU (the argument would be just as flawed as yours); the truth is Sony (much like Nintendo) had to balance the price with the specs. Now I am sure you will counter this by saying that Switch is less powerful than PS4, but the reality is that one is stationary and the other is portable so you cannot directly compare the two. The Switch is powerful for a portable device, and that is a huge win for hard core gamers and Nintendo fans that like to play on the go (moreover, you can be a hardcore gamer that owns a PS4, Xbox One, PC for playing at home and purchase a Switch for playing on the go or in bed; which is what people have done with systems like GB, GBA, PSP/DS. Vita/3DS, etc.; people are not tied to one style of gameplay or one system).

I know I will never convince you based on your past comments, but there are plenty of people that like playing console quality games on the go. Smartphones do not have the ecosystems to support such titles. For many of us, the Switch is a huge boon. Why can't we have a powerful portable system when you guys can have powerful stationary consoles? Why can't both co-exist as filling different needs?

Then quote those people and challenge their point. Don't just throw insults into the void like a child.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.
