Forums - Politics Discussion - World gone mad: Philadelphia considers banning bulletproof glass because it’s racist

Living in Philadelphia I can tell you that what she is touching on is class separation in the city. In Philadelphia, She is right, there should not be a situation where you go into a neighborhood and severed differently based on the racial demographic of the neighborhood. We are not criminals. I would, pay all my bills and expect to be treated like a person. Not like a criminal getting papers through 3 sheets of bullet proof glass. Its crazy on the faze of it. I live in a decent neighborhood. All of our households make 100k+ a year easily.. The very makeup of the individuals here has prompted a huge overreation in stores and shops. Its weird.

No one is attacking white people and not everything is about white men. Please stop. We are saying that we don't like how we are being treated in our neighborhood and that is what she is responding to. The city is obligated to make sure these neighborhoods are safe and our police for is responsive. You are at no more risk around us than anywhere else because of your preconceived notions of us.   The stores are just as safe here as anywhere with less black people.

Please don't internationalize this as some sort of attack against you. Believe me when I say this largely doesn't affect white store owners so really this isn't an anti white thing. Just listen.  A lot are you are offended for no reason.

Cosmic you live there so I'll quote you but I'm asking everyone. Your opinion gets extra consideration here due to proximity.

Do you think the glass is there because the store owners are ignorant? Could it be the employees are ignorant and feel safer working behind the glass? Are the store owners going to the extra expense because of previous robberies? It sounds like you have some such stores in your area and if most are making 6 figures it sounds like a fairly affluent neighborhood (that or the cost of living in Philly is ridiculous).  For all I know the use of safety glass in this instance could be driven by ignorance (i.e. racism). If I've read your post correctly it seems to make you feel shitty.

So, how do you feel about this?:

“Most of our businesses are in not-as-safe neighborhoods,” Adam Xu, the chairman of the Asian American Licensed Beverage Association of Philadelphia told the Inquirer.

Philadelphia is ranked 11th in terms of highest robberies in captical cities. Maybe you’ve always felt safe there but statistics show that Philadelphia is not safe. Maybe bulletproof glass is not classy but if it’s ensuring the safety of people and saving lives then why not?

On a side note the bill should have a provision that if the stores that have to remove the glass get robbed , say three times in a set period the city should have to pay for the glass removal and to replace the safety glass (better yet her and anyone that voted yes).  It would be nice if they were also liable if someone got shot behind the counter after the glass was removed.  <- someone pick this apart I really didn't think much about it...

Politicians actually taking responsibility for something? heh, good luck with that

Yeah no doubt.  Perhaps I just hadn't noticed (pretty sure that is the case) until Obama but the real teeth on the penalty for the ACA didn't kick in until after he was out of office.  It sounds like Trump is trying that shit too with his proposed tax reform.  "What's it matter, when people are really getting screwed I'll have been out of office for a good little bit of time"

There are many different layers to this but the truth is that if I wanted you to act like an animal I would treat you like an animal and believe me it works.   The crime sighted is the result of poverty and if people are hungry they will steal.  I am blown away that people don't get this.  But instead of combating poverty, we basically pick on them by putting up glass to make like criminals.  Its weird because in my neighborhood we have tons of money.  And yet, because we are high black population, we stand in front of 3 stacks of bulletproof glass at the store.  THAT ISN'T NORMAL.  And I am sorry if me saying that make white people uncomfortable.  As LightLaw this is basically about Chinese/Latino store owners.  White people don't do this. So I am insulted that some of you come in here and get auto offended like you actually know what the hell you are talking about.  It is frustrating.  Stop.  Some of you are 1000% worse that SJW because you claim things that AREN'T about you.

My honest opinion, and not just because of my neighborhood, is that the owners don't treat us like right, often talk to us like children or hassles and they can't wait for our money and then to get out.  Its a feeling that we can all understand.  I believe in security and protection but this if crime is really that prevalent, and it is not, then this is a matter for the police to look into.  We aren't criminals living in a huge prison.

Its really about treating everyone the same.  We want everyone to feel safe and we  don't want people to feel insulted when they patronize the bushiness here.  I don't support business that do otherwise.  I understand and support ones right to protect themselves.  I just don't want to be treated like a criminal.  There are store around here as well that don't do that and they are ransacked constantly.  Because we aren't out to get you.  And when we speak up we aren't trying to offend you.

Are you telling me you'll take someone who's potentially a sexual criminal over a bad candidate? Jesus

I am tempted to go dig up my old conversations. For now I will just sum this up, and see if you believe me.

He would vote for Trump even if Trump was found guilty of molesting children, and women. I don't mean "potentially" found guilty of. But actually found guilty of.

He however wants Hillary jailed for being a lawyer that defended Rape.

He would vote for a rapist.. but jail someone DEFENDING rapist. Let that sink in.

No need to dig up posts, I would vote for a pedophile that leaned my way politically over someone I genuinely feel would hurt the country with left wing agendas.

I believe pedophiles are bad and should be punished, although running actively being a pedophile would be odd, but I will always vote in a way that keeps extreme left wingers away from power.

I've never seen a country ruined because a pedophile got power. But left wingers fuck up countries and cities pretty regularly. Let that sink in.

That made me lol because it was random.

But if Moore wins its because dems run shitty candidates.

It's Alabama.  They haven't had a Democrat senator in 20 years.  White, Christian and R = easy win.

Well according to polls they got a chance. But if the dem win I would put blame on partisan these days.

Who is the “we” that’s not trying to get you? Are you speaking for the criminals as well? And sorry, poverty doesn’t excuse crime, especially those that involve violence. Philadelphia has a 6% unemployment rate which is low. The stores in your neighbourhood do not exclusively serve your neighbourhood - fact is that your city has one of the highest crime rate in the US. Poverty does play a part in crime but one doesn’t excuse the other. And it’s a chicken and egg situation, isn’t it? You say they treat you like a criminal so you behave like a criminal. Or is it a case of you behave like a criminal and you get treated like a criminal. At the end of the day, you don’t like in a communist country so you have the choice to not give your money to the stores that don’t have good customer service. The market will speak for itself and the shitty stores will go out of business.

umm... doesn't that suggest that having bullet proof glass makes stores safer then?

Should have been 'aren't ransacked constantly'.   Thanks!
