Nintendo is pretty dominated by multiplayer as well. Mario Kart, Smash, Splatoon are all primarily multiplayer games and there are tons of others that have multiplayer functionality, heck even Pokémon.

As for the question, no I don't think it really has much to do with that. The Switch is selling fast, so it makes sense to attempt to sell your software on it, and increase the market for your games. Couple that with Nintendo becoming better at 3rd party relations (we know this is the case with indies, maybe it also includes AAA), and they'll get more support.

And if that was more successful, singleplayer would be dead.

They also have Quake Champions, so there is that too.
