Forums - Nintendo Discussion - 2018 Seems to Be the Year Switch is Focusing on the Core Gamer

Can Fire Emblem really be called niche anymore? It seems to have crossed over to the mainstream ever since the 3ds happened. I'm pretty sure it can be considered a heavy hitter at this point.  Sure, maybe it isn't a Pokemon or Mario Kart, but it's still a pretty popular franchise now.

Agreed. I also think a Switch Sports would be very successful. Maybe also a new WarioWare.

Nah, retreading the sports franchise won't do anything since it didn't improve WII U's prognosis ...

What Nintendo needs to do is to make more content that people want to buy instead of focusing on functionality like their Wii days. The reason why titles such as Brain Age, Nintendogs, Wii Sports went out of favour compared to Mario, Pokemon or Animal Crossing is because consumers did not see the value in the former's content and thus found easily replaceable alternatives on other platforms ...

Nintendo needs to create new concepts that are not easily replaceable such Splatoon for an example and capitalize on their unique IPs ...

Depends on what the definition of 'niche' is. Which is impossible because everyone has their own idea of what is niche.

Once multiple installments start breaking the 1 million (or even 2 million) barrier, like what happened with the more recent ones, I think it's safe to say it's no longer niche.

I think we're going to see a broad appeal in terms of games. Comes natural since more developers are attracted to the system but also - gotta say it looks like Nintendo has invested a lot more in game development this time around.

Either way, I like were we are heading =)

There's no guarantee Metroid Prime 4 or Bayonetta 3 are launching in 2018 - right now I'd say they're both safe bets for 2019.

Personally I think 2018 is the year Nintendo try to bring more of their 3DS/portable audience on board. They'll prioritise getting Pokemon and Animal Crossing out in 2018, I think.

Agree, higher chances are for Pokemon and espacily for Animal Crossing in 2018. than they are for Bayonetta 3 and Metroid Prime 4.

We will find out on Januray.

We will found out about part of 2018. lineup (mostly spring and summer lineup), they will not talk about holl 2018. lineup.

I think Nintendo has been focusing on the core since 2012...well except 2016 when they didn't focus at all...
