Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony says it can not ignore the Switch

I think you're reading far too much into this. In no way does his comment imply they're going to target a portable market.

But I also disagree with Kaz, the Switch is not a direct competitor to the PS4. They have very different software libraries and appeal to different people. If you look at the top 100 selling games on the PS4 the vast majority won't be on the Switch even when you look again in a few years time. Their will be a minimal impact, except in Japan.

Except in (and from) Japan isn't that the one people care the most about?

Something is coming. All of this was bound to happen when Nintendo mixed the markets. The whole industry is going to change more than ever in the next 7 years and it started with the Switch.

How would making online gaming free help them though?

Would you be more inclined to purchase a game on PS4 if it has free online, than requiring a subscription to play online on another platform?

If you say yes to the former. Then that's how it helps them.

It is easy to say 'Yes' but that's not what people do.  You are a long time member. We literally have members here who said they will never buy a console that ask(s) them to pay to play online and still they own a PS4.

Please...this does not mean they're looking into Sony Swap. It just doesn't make sense for sony, it'd be expensive as all hell, if you have a game on PS4 that you want to play on the Sony Swap, most likely you have to repay for it again, especially if they go with the game card format. There's just too many hurdles for such a device.

What this sounds like to me is making PSN/PS+ subscription fees take a hike in price. Either that, or do a PlayStation Game Pass.

It'd be awesome if they took a proper shot at a PlayStation Phone.

It was bound to happen regardless of the Switch and had been talked about long before the Switch was released.  The limiting factor has always been technology.

Why do we need to know how you gonna get more mo way outta people Sony? we don’t care to hear that shit. You should be telling us how you gonna give us a ton of new content.
Dude address his base like a prick, miss House already.

I don't think they should ignore it either. In fact, I think Sony should follow Nintendo's example over chasing Microsoft and coming out with new unprofitable hardware. I would buy a Sony-made dockable tablet/console in a heartbeat. As long as it gives a similar experience to playing a PS4, as in, having proper storage space to play modern AAA games.

How could they? I'm sure some Sony offices have Switch units in them.

I am baffled by the number of people taking this as a new handheld/hybrid is coming. Is that what you read from “getting more customers paying continuously for content”?
