Fire Emblem 2018 will most likely "modernize" that franchise. After the success of the 3DS games plus the success of the mobile game, Fire Emblem has definitely gotten more popular than it has ever been. With the Switch, I believe Fire Emblem will be huge.

The series' presence in Smash Bros. certainly helped, right?

Not extremely in my opinion. Sure it brought awareness to the franchise, but it definitely didn't have as much an effect as the 3DS games, based on sales. The Gamecube and Wii Fire Emblem games sold pretty poorly according to Nintendo's expectations. And together they don't even equal half the sales of either Awakening or Fates when digital is included. Fire Emblem was introduced in Melee and continued in Brawl and that didn't change the mediocre sales of the first game or its sequel. Sadly.

The most recent example of this would probably be Monster Hunter: World.
