Forums - Sports Discussion - Russia banned from 2018 Winter Olympics

I'm also shocked the Olympics and winter Olympics committees had the balls to do it. Needs to happen otherwise the events lose all credibility.

Around the Network

I find it harder and harder to take the constant blabla about doping, the IOC etc. for serious. It has become a complete bullshit system.

At the olympic games 2016 for example, there were many athletes using illegal doping substances. But nobody even talked about it - it was simply considered okay, because they had official permits allowing them to take these illegal substances!

They had these permits because they claimed they required these substances for medical reasons. That may sound reasonable at first, but it ultimately completely ruins the anti-doping idea:

- even if they really require it for medical reasons, it still gives them an unfair advantage over the other athletes who are not allowed to take these substances. Think Serena and Venus Williams - these poor ill creatures are apparently forced to take a whole plethora of illegal substances for medical reasons. But I'm sure the countless victories they've had had absolutely nothing to do with these substances!

- these exceptional permits are a strong incentive to claim/invent or simply exaggerate a medical problem. Just think of "medical marihuana" in the US - the very moment marihuana was legalized in the US for people who required it for medical reasons, everyone and their mother suddenly had a medical issue that needed to be cured with marihuana.

- The whole exception permit system strangely seems to benefit some nations more than others. For example, the USA alone had dozens of athletes with exceptional permits for using illegal substances - Russia only had one. Are US athletes strangely much more ill than russian athletes? If so, better send these poor creatures to hospital than to the olympic games!

The current system is nothing but a joke. We need to either get rid of these exceptional permits, or simply allow doping for everyone. But a system that allows doping substances for some athletes but forbids them for others (with what seems like a strange preference for certain nations) is just unfair.

As we approach the games, it will be interesting to see just how upset Putin is. For those that do not know, he was an athlete and has pushed for Russia to be a world power when it comes to athletics and the Olympics. This is driving him crazy.
