Forums - Gaming Discussion - Next "TALES OF" announcement at december 16th?

Tales of Legendia was the last TALES game I thoroughly enjoyed. Series is in need of a major shakeup.

Well Namco confirmed a while back a Tales game is coming to Switch. So I imagine this will be a new game announced for PS4 and Switch.

1.) Wii wasn't a handheld or a hardcore gaming device for many. Handhelds are the future of Japan, I didn't bring up anything about the Wii... Tales of the Abyss 3D sold better than the original Tales of the Abyss on PS2...even though PS2 had a much larger install base.  Why a port of a game that sold better than the original didn't prompt them to bring more tales to 3ds is beyond me. We say it's a "match made in heaven" because Switch is finally able to handle Tales console games and it's portable. Any Japanese game on Switch is going to automatically benefit from that added portability.

Well the Wii sold well in JPN, why I brought it up. And do you have an actual source for ToA 3DS > PS2?

No, just sounds like a way for Nintendo fans to port beg, which is pretty common on these boards. But yeah, having the portability is definitely a cool factor for anyone interested in a gaming console, thats true.

Yes, yes please look at the only solid numbers we have on VGChartz. The 3ds version outsold the ps2 version by around a couple hundred thousand... that kind of says a lot.

And no, it's not port begging. These companies know that they need to make money so if they see a need on Switch, they'll support it. Which is the reason why they announced a Tales game coming to Switch. We didn't need to beg for that, it's just that Nintendo's hardware can finally allow for multiplatform tales games. And for the record, I'm not a strictly Nintendo fan. I didn't even grow up playing Nintendo, I had a PS1 and Crash Bandicoot, Rayman, FFVII, etc. I just find a lot more value in the Switch over PS4 right now, and that's just me.

2.) The 2nd best selling game in the series is Tales of Symphonia and it had a much lower installbase than Xilia had on PS3 and that is currently the best selling title. And Tales became a PS thing for the same reasons FF became a PS thing. Only Namco has revisited Nintendo and seen good results. Why they never return to Nintendo as often as they should is as good a guess as anybody else's.

lol ? There was a single Tales game on a Nintendo device when the series became a PS staple. Its always been a largely PS thing unlike FF. And how many times have the revisited Nintendo for good results?

I gave you the most recent one, Tales of They Abyss. And Tales of Symphonia...which outsold the PS2 version as well. And Dawn of the new World... Tales became a PS Staple because of the same reasons FF did, the PS1 was easier to program, more storage for sound and video, it was versatile between sprites and 3d rendering, etc. They didn't just decide to not support the 64, lol. They made sound decisions not to support the 64, and then returned on Gamecube, GBA, Wii, DS, 3DS, and now Switch.

1/4th of all tales series software was also sold on Nintendo hardware. So around 5 million is really nothing to sneeze at. Especially for a series as niche as tales.

I mean again... source? numbers? you are doing a good job of just telling us about quantitative facts, and doing an equally good job of not telling us how you know. i mean im not being snarky here, I legit want the source.

Based on VGChartz's sales, which is all we have tbh. You can do the math, here: http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=Tales+of&publisher=&platform=&genre=&minSales=0&results=200

3.) I will make a bet any day of the week that if a Tales game comes to Switch, it'll outsell the PS4 version Lifetime. I'd go to my grave on that. Switch is going to swiftly surpass the PS4 in hardware sales and those who get on early will see great results. Hell, Bomberman sold 500K+ units. If they were smart, they'd support the Switch fully. Switch should be able to handle any Tales game that has been developed so far and most likekly the newest game. They don't require much of a gpu to run due to them not utilizing PBR pipeline in the same way western developers do. It's just a no brainer. Japanese developers were reported to be scrambling to get support on Switch, and rightfully so. It is THE platform to support and it's able to handle the same games that they're used to developing on PS4 and Xbox One. That's the main difference in support.

haha ok buddy, breathe. switch will swiftly surpass PS4 sales? wow ok... THE platform to support is the one with the current lowest install base? ill keep that in mind .

lol, THE platform to support is the one that has hit half the PS4 install base in less than a year (in Japan, where these games do best). Of course it isn't going to swiftly hit 67 million. And I wasn't even talking about hardware. The tales game that comes to both PS4 and Switch, the Switch version will outsell it. That's all I'm saying.

For Japanese developers the Switch should be supported and Japanese developers are finding out the hard way. Just for reference in Japan, a game like Lost Sphear. The Switch version only sold 2k less than the PS4 version with less than half the install base. It's not always about going straight to the console with the highest install base, sometimes it's about speaking to the right audience. My bet is still on the table if you're a betting man.

PLEAse, no vita version, just PS4 with a next gem engine. It’s time they took this series to the next level.

Did you bother checking your numbers for your comparison in ToA? because there are missing data from PS2 ToA.
and with all due respect with Vghartz when it comes to sales of Japanese games outside Japan their accuracy is questionable.

OT: I hope for Tales of Vesperia Remake. The English localization was already confirm by Troy Baker before.

There's a good chance it'll be PS4 + Switch, but that would still allow for a significant improvement in tech (spec wise the Switch is effectively a Vita successor). In general we're likley going to see a lot of Sony, and Nintendo brand exclusives appearing on both. There's little reason for most Japanese titles to not take advantage of both platforms.

Hoping it's not Vesperia. Would rather a new game. Berseria was amazing, 2nd best Tales game I played. Hopefully it's Switch/PS4.

Baba's got to get over this PS only thing.

Same. Hoping they don't have a Tales Room to announce a 10 year old port. Tales games aren't like FF games were all their good games are old ones, they have made some good ones since Vesperia. I enjoyed Graces and Beseria was better than Vesperia imo.

Never got the insane hype around Vesperia and Symphonia. Both are great games, but not of the cult following they seem to have. Wonder if it has to do with fanboys of some systems loving that they were exclusive at the time and thus overrating them in their mind.

The last one YOU thoroughly enjoyed was 12 years ago.  Perhaps YOU have changed in that time?

Whenever I see post like that I always think people are just banking on nostalgia.  Like the people going "the last good FF was FF6".

The last Zelda I enjoyed was Link to the past. That doesn't mean the series got bad, means I lost interest in it.

No, I am anti nostalgia.

Better visuals would be nice but it doesnt need FFXV levels. Id rather them focus on puzzles and exploration.
