1.) A plurality election with no instant run-off favors a two party system
2.) An electoral college, with a winner-take-all system makes it so that one party receives a disproportionately high amount of power with a disproportionately low number of votes
3.) The party that is favored by the electoral college has pretty much completely abandoned fact-based discourse over the past decade plus - Trump does well in a world absent of facts
4.) The opposition party ran a competent, but well-connected political elite, which the country has grown tired of - Clinton
5.) The party that has abandoned fact-based discourse ran an incredibly effective smear campaign, blowing minor improprieties into criminal implications, against Clinton that lasted over four years, while producing no tangible results
If you want evidence of #5, Hillary's emails were the most covered story of 2016. The bi-partisanly appointed FBI Director said, "no charges", and even the Trump justice department is taking no real action, because there is nothing to take action against. They just really like talking about it, because it is a political talking point that worked really well for them.
In the end, the American voter chose "not Trump" by a margin of 8%. They chose Clinton over Trump by a margin of 2%. But it wasn't enough to overcome the wackiness of 2016.
