PS4 accounts for over 1/3 of all hardware sales in the UK since 2014.

PS4 accounts for about 1/2 of all hardware sales in Germany since 2014.

PS4 accounts for under 1/4 of all hardware sales in Japan since 2014.

PS4 may have sold more in Japan than any individual European country but it represents a much smaller percentage of the overall market.

Going by population PS4's popularity seems to be quite below average in Japan. Which is interesting considering Xbox is a complete non-factor there. They really hate consoles over there.

How can someone even try to claim that Japan isn't becoming less relevant for Sony? Look at it this way,

There's 1 PS4 sold for every 23.5 people in Japan.

There's 1 PS4 sold for every 18 people in France.

There's 1 PS4 sold for every 17.6 people in Germany.

There's 1 PS4 sold for every 16.2 people in the U.S.

There's 1 PS4 sold for every 15.3 people in the UK.


Look at the UK and France. Combined they have a population that's less than 4.5% higher than Japans, and yet Sony has sold 48% more consoles in those two countries.

On top of that, most European countries consume the same types of games. so If you make a game that caters to that market, you have a huge pool of consumers to draw from even if that game has limited appeal outside of the region.

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Well Switch started completly owning Japan and Switch is in same time home console also, so PS4 grow in Japan would be very limited in any case.

The Switch did not affect the PS4 that much, if at all. The PS4 will be flat from last year in its 4th year. It wouldn’t have grown with or without the Switch.

Thats a point, it will be flat in Japan while it will be best year in rest of world. Of Course that sales could be better without Switch, beacuse Switch is in same time home console also.
