What did they have worth porting to console back then ?

Age of Empires.
Freelancer.
MechCommander.
MechWarrior.
Age of Mythology.
Flight Simulator.
Monster Truck Madness.
Rise of Nations.

Could also throw Starlancer and Black and White into the fray... And that is just off the top of my head.

Now Age of Empires 2 ended up on PS2... Mechwarrior has been on a couple consoles, but usually were remakes/remaginings/completely different titles in the franchise.

Forza would do insane numbers on PS i'd love to see what that awesome franchise does on hardware and user base that would embrace the hell out of it.    I'd much prefer a MS made star wars game over EA lol.

Halo, Gears seem to be in decline. Microsoft could of course pull a Call of Duty WW2 and have both franchises be the rave of the industry again with the sales to match, but that's a difficult thing to pull off.

Crackdown 3 Has drawn significant criticism already anyway, before release, doubt it will do well.

Which is ultimately the crux of the issue, all of the Microsoft-made Xbox One games are on PC anyway and aren't dominating sales charts.

I got a surface and it makes sense very good at what it does, but xbox just doesn't and i have one.  But won't be buying the next one, just not worth it.  To me X1 was the straws that broke the camel's back.

I don't own a surface. I have self-built PC's.
Used to run Windows Phone until Microsoft neglected the platform, happily locked into Android now.

Xbox I keep buying for some reason. Don't ask me why, I haven't been happy with the platform since the early 360 days.

My question is:

If Xbox cease to exist tomorrow, what will be the legacy of Xbox? How did they contributed to the industry? In which way they pushed the industry forward?

They were one of the key-players in bringing online gaming to consoles with Xbox Live in North America and Europe. I guess Halo was also one of the most iconic franchises of the 2000's? Uhhh... Damn, I can't think of anything else.

So a system that is well on its way to outsell the snes isn't successful? Okkaayyy......

They don't need to beat PS to be successful, you know...

By that logic the Dodge Neon was successful, just because it outsold the Ford Model T.

You knowledge of automotive history is severely lacking the Dodge Neon didn't even come close to outselling the Ford Model T.  The Dodge Neon sold a bit over 2 million units the Ford Model T sold 16.5 million units.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_Neon

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Model_T

The Model T numbers are even more impressive when you consider the fact that through most of its production run (1908-1927) the US had less then one third of the population then it has now and the percentage of people that had drivers licenses was a lot smaller then it is now.  At one point over half the cars on US roads where Model T's.

4th console generation:
Super Nintendo: 49.1 million consoles sold.
Megadrive: 33.75 million.
PC Engine: 10 million.
Neo Geo: 0.98 million.
CD-i: 0.57 million.

Total: 94.4 million consoles sold that generation.

Fast forward to the 7th console generation (As 8th hasn't concluded yet):
Xbox 360: 84.4 million consoles.
Playstation 3: 80 million consoles.
Wii: 101 million consoles.

Total: 265.4 million consoles.

That means the 4th gen console market was only 35% of the size of the 7th gen.

With that... A console that sells 40 million pieces of hardware, regardless of generation is still a damn good achievement.

You’re just proving my point tbh. The console market grew to almost 300% the size. So 1/3 Of 40 Million is 13.3 Million. 13 Million 4th gen would have been slightly more than PC Engine. You call that a success?!

Your video game knowledge is also severely lacking the PC Engine sold only 5.8 million units.  So 13.3 million units is a lot more then slightly more then the PC Engine.  Also the PC Engine was actually a success in Japan since it sold 3.9 million units there it just flopped in the west.

Similar enough that selling 40M (and probably 50M) consoles is still successful.

Okay, I don't disagree with that, but making a blanket statement to deflect criticism of a company's lack of market share isn't something you should do, even if it's a company you like.

Yeah it will be a success and yeah it will beat SNES but  the market was way different back then.

Also arguing about whether the Xbox One is a success or not is futile, the discussion is where Microsoft is headed.

I think that's a valid question. Where are they going with Gaming? Their intentions aren't clear. And fans of Xbox need to know if they need to buy both an Xbox One with Windows 10 to play video games or buy a PC with Windows 10 to play videogames. Or do they have to buy both because Halo may never see PC?

I'm just really disappointed with the XB1. The 360 was such an amazing console. The PS4 is just better in every way.

It seems that wikipedia page isn't entirely accurate or hasn't been updated.
It lists PC Engine at 10 million here:

Here it also seems to be above 10 million world wide.

Other sources place it at 10 million here:

Well even if it sold closer to ten million units what I said about it being a success in Japan is still correct and 13.3 million compared to 10 million is still a lot more then just slightly more.  If something sells slightly more then 10 million it would be in the 10 to 11 million units range.

A jump from 10 million to 13.3 million is 33%. It's not a small increase by any measure.

And it most certainly was a success in Japan.
