I never got the appeal of most MMOs. Maybe games like TES Online could have done it better, but I'd rather play those solo. Most of them just seem like they focus too much in combat rather than story and other forms of gameplay, and just feels repetitive in the end.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

MMOs have a pretty fundamental issue in terms of story though. They simply can't change the world or characters that much during the story because otherwise it isn't really accessible to new players. Either they already see the effects of the story and quest in the world because other people have done them, or they just can't do them and miss out on a bunch of content.

Sometimes they have stories but they aren't that good.  You can have a wall of text but if the characters or boring or story is generic then it just doesn't click.  Archage was a pretty cool MMO when it first came out (was one of the best looking ones) but the story was pretty generic which led to a boring and not giving a shit story line.

WoW probably has some of the best characters and story line but that didn't even blow me away that much.  Usually it is just clicking through the walls of text to move on to the next quest.

I don't know if this section is needed or not, but I do enjoy MMORPGs having played FFXI for years now and having at least tried a few others. That said, MMO games normally have dedicated forums. Maybe because other places don't have an MMO thread?

Favorite MMO will always be Maplestory during its prime (2005-2011). No other MMO has been as satisfying to play as that game

I know they have stories, I'm just giving a reason for why they aren't that good. I mean, they can't really do some things. They can't really kill off an important character or have a town be wiped out or something because otherwise everyone who hasn't got to that point is just going to be like "wtf did that town go". Or it could go the other way... see an important character killed during a quest, return awhile later and find out they're still wandering around giving the quest to other people.

They could handle it like WoW did with the Lich King expansion with the Death Knight story line.  I believe at the end of the Death Knight class specific quests there was some huge battle that gets triggered every 10 or 20 mins I believe.  I just remember having to wait for it at the end of the quest line for the Death Knight class when you are in the Death Knight starting area.

So you can have those event quests but it requires its own special area on the world (not accessible to everyone 24/7).  Pretty much a walled garden.

Can't games like Cod and BF technically be considered MMOs? They are massive multiplayer online games...
