Forums - Nintendo Discussion - How will the Loot Box controversy, if played out to have an effect, affect Nintendo?

You know, there have been other companies with toy to life products (figurines with ingame content). Not a peep. Somehow Nintendo only gets singled out by you guys. Very odd. Why possibly?

If it happened with core franchises like Nintendo do it it would be 10 times bigger the backlash.

Obviously it will be more accepted in kiddy games like skylanders.

What do you mean if it happened with core Nintendo franchises. Both Zelda BotW and Mario Odyssey have Amiibo that unlock stuff.

Difference between those games and say Skylanders is that in Skylanders the actual characters are locked behind figurines. In Zelda and Mario its just cosmetics. If you want them you can shell out the money for an amiibo. If you want the skylanders you can shell out money for the figurine. If you want something in EA game you have to shell out the money and hope to get lucky. You could spend $1 and get what you wanted (well probably $5.00 min) or spend $1,000,000 and not get what you wanted.

Look at phone games. DBZ Dokai battle or whatever called and Yu-Gi-Oh duel links or whatever called. Both use a sort of form of loot boxes for new cards. Difference is, in Yu-gi-oh, you can guarantee yourself ot get what you want by buying the whole box. You could get what you wanted in the first pack, or say everything you wanted in only 50 packs, or it may take you 80 packs, or the whole box of 120 packs. But you are guaranteed to get it as long as you buy out the whole box. In DBZ, you could open packs non stop and never get what you wanted. Yes statistically you should get it sooner or later, but no guarantee.

its not, they have done their own thing no matter what anyways, usually almost seemingly oblivious to the competition or ways others do things, like voice chat for example....

agreed Don't mind the figurines themselves..but fuck Nintendo for locking Epona and Wolf Link behind amiibos..the asking price for the amiibos necessary are ridiculous now especially the one needed for Epona

I've seen Wolf Link and Rider Link amiibos at Toys R Us and Fred Meyer.

that doesn't help me as I live in the Virgin Islands ..also Rider Link doesnt give you Epona unless I'm mistaken

Nope, only the Twilight Princess Link gives you Epona, or the Smash Link to be more accurate. So the two super early Zelda Amiibo's. You know back in Wii U days.

Rider Link does give you unique horse armor though I'm fairly certain. Worth way more than all the cosmetic outfits in my opinion. The cosmetics you need to spend countless hours grinding dragon shards and what not to get them good enough to wear. Horse armor you can just put on and be good.

This is the worst type of cherry picking I have seen on this site yet lmao.

We can all agree that nothing should be locked behind figurines. That's why bad sales numbers for amiibo is good news.

If EA were to lock content behind figurines then you can guarantee that they would lock the best content, the things that everyone would want. Nintendo get away with it because they lock less exciting things, or often nothing at all (see SMO). The difference between Nintendo and other companies isn't that Nintendo get a free pass just 'cause they're Nintendo, but because Nintendo know where that line is drawn and are careful not to step over it. On the occasion when they do, such as with Mario Party 10, the backlash is there.

There is nothing to agree on since they are figurines first as a product, and they are not integral to the progression of the game or random. Comparing it to lootboxes is stupid, plain and simple.

Also, although Amiibo sales have stalled, they are still selling millions.

Even if they are cosmetic everyone wins when they're aren't locked behind shitty figurines. I don't want any microtransactions including those that are not tied to progression. My standards are higher.

Yep, I've got mad some times when they lock some things that I'd like to get. They should stop locking difficulty modes behind amiibos, for example. But I buy them as figurines, and I don't think that they're badly priced.
