Forums - Nintendo Discussion - The Nintendo Switch is winning because it’s ‘good enough’

RE: https://www.polygon.com/2017/11/22/16689870/nintendo-skyrim-doom-rocket-league-graphics

I found this to be an interesting article that was calling out how Switch is proving that graphics are not the driver of success. Games with superior graphical versions on other consoles are selling exceptionally well because frankly, Switch versions are good enough when combined with the awesomeness of the portability the console provides.

Though, I am curious what they are basing the sales data on as they have many titles selling better than SMO which is inaccurate as far as I know.

Here's an interesting quote as an example of the main point of the article:

Rocket League is an ideal Switch port. The resolution is limited, and there isn’t much in the way of aliasing. The team made graphical sacrifices to make sure the game ran at 60 fps, and it was the right decision. The game feels amazing in action, and the bright colors of both teams and the ball itself makes the action easy to follow even if the graphical fidelity is lacking a bit when compared to more powerful systems. You can tell it doesn’t look as good as other versions of the game, but you can play it in the bathroom. The rest is meaningless.

I completely agree. I could care less that I could play a similar game with potentially better frame rate and definitely better graphical detail... the ability to plop on my bed, in a plane, or on the toilet and play that game is far more valuable.

Can't wait to see the game support in 2018.

I will definitely say that portability is a huge plus for me. I held off on buying Skyrim SE because I wanted it portable on switch. I ended up paying double. I don't get a lot of time in front of the television, being able to take it with me on car rides, bus rides, downtimes at work, whatever. Its big for me. The switch is the console for adults who are on the go constantly. I killed over an hour waiting at the dmv on skyrim. I can't do that with a PS4 or Xbox 1.

Games are fun.

People buy Nintendo for their games. Nintendo knew they owned the handheld market and by combining the two would utilize their strengths .

They'll all be published by Nintendo or have Mario in them somehow.

Although... I wouldn't like to think that the top 10 best selling Switch games would include late ports of multi-platform games.

Lets wait and see a third party actually try and earn that spot first. From what has released so far at least, I think we could all agree Nintendo is the only one really doing so and therefore deserving of the places in the top 10 best selling Switch games. I don't think anyone in their right mind could say a late port of Rocket League, Skyrim or Doom that's released everywhere else already is deserving of selling more than brand new, built from the ground up, high quality experiences like Super Mario Odyssey or Breath of the Wild.

The nintendo switch is winning because it's the most powerful portable ever made and has no competition. It also has, obviously, nintendo games(and also, some mid-tier games that not do so well in other consoles).

They're probably basing this on the top selling items you see when you enter the eShop. So currently for this week Rocket League is selling more units than SMO. Overall SMO is obviously much much higher.

I know people hate to hear this but it's the damn truth. The runner ups are games from other Japanese 3rd parties that have the same vision as Nintendo or somewhere in that vein. Stuff like RPGs from Square Enix, Sega's titles, Capcom, etc.

OP:

The Switch is not groundbreaking in the graphics or processing department but it's an amazing device for how small it is. And yeah, I'd say having an amazing handheld component and "good enough" performance for multiplats is fine. PC gamers every day have to deal with minimum and medium settings. As long as the game runs well enough, I think it's fine. If you want a better experience sure, go get a PS4 or Xbone for those games. No biggie. But  Nintendo's stronghold isn't multiplats, it's exclusives. And boy do they have a shit ton of them that sell really well.

Of course these games aren't going to sell 10M, probably not even 3M, but I think they'll do quite alright. Both Rocket League and Skyrim are already above Mario Odyssey in the eShop, so they're certainly not disappointing.

Portability + a first year of hot software helps. Not my ideal place for current third party games, but a haven for exclusives, now and likely in the future.

Artificially winning artificially.
