Forums - Gaming Discussion - What if the 9th gen launched with Standard and Premium hardware!

Standard and Premium consoles at launch?

Yay! They both play the s... 13 38.24%

Nay! Consoles aren't sup... 21 61.76%

Total:34

So back in 2013 when the X1 and PS4 launched... but I think we all kind of felt like, "these specs are huge upgrade, but the limitations are already obvious."

Battlefield 4 for example! It struggled to maintain 60 fps and the resolution suffered for trying to achieve 60 fps.

So here's crazy idea. PS5 and Xbox Two(?) may aim for $399. But what if the Standard console was $399 and the Premium was $599 ($699 if they wanna go crazy) with a massive GPU upgrade, maybe more RAM for better textures, and MAYBE a faster CPU! As some might know there is a big difference between a $199 GPU vs a $399 GPU.

Essentially both would play the same games, both would go down in price over time, and those who want higher fidelity visuals than a $399 console can offer will have it at launch.

Quite frankly, if the X1X and PS4 Pro struggle to hit 4K then I don't have much hope for the upcoming 9th gen consoles to always hit 4K at $399.

However, I don't want a huge CPU disparity in Standard and Premium consoles because some developers might not optimize properly for the slower CPU. Hence, both need good CPUs.

So yay, nay!? How do we feel about this?

EDIT: NO SWITCH IN THIS DISCUSSION! IT DON'T COUNT IN MY WORLD!

Bad idea. At the start of the gen it seems kinda pointless. Mid-gen upgrades approach would be better than releasing premium console at launch. Because mid-gen consoles except for more power are built with some new tech which wasn’t available in 2013. So if we get for example two different options in 2020 or 2021 it will be two consoles built on 2020 tech while with mid gen upgrades, the more powerful option will use 2024 tech

Then not that many people would buy the standard models, most core gamers would get the expensive one, and the price difference might not be enough to sell regular people into getting the cheaper one. Sort of like the WiiU with 8gb vs 32 gb model.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Come join The 2018 Obscure Game Monthly Review Thread.

60fps will never be the focus for console games. we will still be playing 30 fps games on a ps5 unless something fundamentally changes.

you really think sony gonna drop a 600 bucks console again lol?

if you truly care for 60fps and ultra settings you wont get past a desktop gaming pc.

So why is there a market for X1X and PS4 Pro?

Clearly people want higher fidelity in the console arena.

But the standard consoles are still selling in spite of mid gen upgrades existing. Why? They play the same games but the price disparity is a barrier.

Your Wii U comparison is weak because the storage disparity is not the same as a massive GPU disparity.

A lot of people bought the 360 without a HDD because it was cheaper and storage space wasn't crucial for everybody.

I really want 60fps out of nextgen, if I need to buy a premium console then I will, the only reason PS4 Pro can't do 1080p@60fps in games the standard does 1080p@30fps is because of the trash jaguar cpu, same with X1X. They can pump up the resolution but when it comes to doubling the fps they have their hands tied.

The biggest upgrade from next-gen will likely come from the CPU as opposed to the GPU as the Pro/X1X have already made half the leap on the gpu front.

But I'm not sure I trust they'll aim for 60fps still, and even if I would like the option of a premium console at launch I definitely don't see that happening. It'll be 3 years later.

because the consoles we got in 2013 were weak and ran games in sub hd like all the time on xbox and more than often on ps4 . Ppl had 1080p native tvs in their homes and had to play with lower res than their native resolution which is the same shit they had with ps3 and xbox 360.

4K tvs are new and ppl wanna make use of them so thats why they exist. Ppl with 1080p sets buy  pro or xbox x to play at the native tv res with 60 fps locked in BF1 instead of that 35-50 fps mess they get on og or slim ps4/xbox one. And also there is downsampling.

honestly the new consoles are still weak. both run with that old ass jaguar bottlebeck of a cpu in them.

they will never go for 60 fps because  a game with 30fps will look waaaay better when it comes to graphics and graphics sell.  im a graphics whore myself and bought games before just for the visuals.

Eh... even for 2013 the 8th gen consoles weren't considered great tech. They were considered mid range gaming rigs. At the time the GPU was worth MAYBE $150 and Jaguar architecture was already dated.

For $599 or less in 2013, we probably could have already had the PS4 Pro. However they were definitely avoiding risks at the time and the concept of premium consoles wasn't really a thing yet.
