Forums - Politics Discussion - FCC is trying to end net neutrality. This is what it can look like.

The internet has become a necessity, very much like a utility in the modern world and this Randian type move is going to break it. There are some providers like Google that likely won't do it, but their are many areas that won't have that luxury since their aren't many carriers to choose from.

Anyone that thinks government will "control" big business is terribly naive. Net neutrality is just another big business protection scheme.

More like a consumer protection scheme.

God, we can't get these Republicans out of office soon enough.

And yet you have millions of moronic Republican voters parroting the same old GOP line, claiming that Net Neutrality is somehow a BAD thing for us consumers. Because 1., they don't want to bother actually doing research and thinking for themselves, and 2. It's far easier and more psychologically comforting to tell yourself "My party always does what's right, I support what they tell me to support because it's always good".

And mind you, I say that as someone who is sick to death of BOTH major American political parties.

Net neutrality robs consumers and businesses of choice. It protects incumbent ISPs from real competition, as it requires all players to provide the exact same service.

It's like cable TV, essentially. We all want to be able to pick and choose the cable channels that we pay for. But, big media has bent over backwards to ensure that we have to pay for everything, even if we don't want it. Net neutrality ensures that we are subject to the exact same problem with the internet. I would gladly choose a slower connection to about 95% of the World Wide Web, in exchange for faster streaming and gaming network connection. But, under the current law, it is illegal for a company to offer me that. That is ridiculous. Likewise, I might be interested in starting an internet service provider that creates plans tailored to the needs of individuals, or various businesses. I am not allowed to do that. In this way, the current law protects the big boys from smaller startups.

It truly is textbook doublespeak, essentially the same way as the Patriot Act is the opposite of patriotism.

well i dont care about social media, and actually if the prices are similar, my price will go down for games and video. it would benefit me if the caps went away with it. whatever, i never been much of a trender. we will see this time next year if it got better or worse, time will tell, at this point im just glad its not a lootbox for services...... lol

The big ISPs are those who want the net neutrality gone the most and then we have people who believe it would be a much better situation where competition would make the life for those ISPs harder....

If you use streaming services your prices will go up for sure or the speed will be slowed down, same for gaming or any high bandwidth service. The people who will most likely end up saving a few dollars will be those social media users since facebook and the like doesn't use a lot of data.
