But it seems this is already happening in Portugal? Thus it's not a worst-case scenario but reality instead. Also, I seriously doubt any competition is going to show up to save you. I imagine it's very hard to get into telecom business, and as long as the situation doesn't get too bad (only worse), there won't be enough demand for competition anyway.

According to the Australian Beureau of Statistics I have access to 419 Internet Service Providers (With 77~ being large companies), which all have access to the same physical infrastructure.
So I am pretty sure competition in my case will ensure such a thing never happens.

People do need to complain until the cows come home... Complaints is what has brought us to the point where companies like EA are taking a long hard look at Micro-transactions, people are voting with their wallets and their voices and it's working.

It doesn't seem as good in the US though, unless this Wikipedia article about telecom companies and this Wikipedia article about broadband providers are missing something essential. It seems there's a relatively limited amount of nation-wide service providers, and I doubt local service providers can really make much of a mark in the big picture unless the situation is absolutely horrible. Of course in your case the situation sounds good, this thread seems to be more about the US.

EA is the only case where I know people have actually managed to change anything about microtransactions, and even it's not a guaranteed change - last I heard, it sounded like microtransactions were on hold and could simply be coming back. Personally I'd also attribute the supposedly weak sales mainly to the first game: I'm under the impression the same happened with Watch Dogs 2 and Titanfall 2 as well. People didn't like the first game that much, so there's less interest about the sequel as well. This seems to be in line with the same pattern.

I think we're more protected from any shit like this. Not just legally, but I mean there's actually a lot of competition for internet providers here. From what I understand the US internet situation is completely messed up with very little choice between providers, I think some regions literally only have one choice even, so if they want to carve up the internet and charge piece by piece for it there's nobody waiting to take all their customers by offering a better deal like we have.

The problem everywhere does not lie on having few choices, but on the formation of a cartel. This kind of rules benefit all providers, so they can simply agree on following along. They just want to block you (or charge extra) for stuff that uses a lot of bandwidth, like 4K streaming or game downloads.

That's ridiculous because they are soooo eager to advertise plans of 100 Mbps, 200, 1 Gbps. The only use for such speed is downloads and streaming, basic web usage would be fine with 15 Mbps. So they simply want to charge you more because you use the speed they were selling to you. Disgusting.

In the US, people have few choices in smaller cities. It's a damn big country, it's not viable to have 4 or 5 different companies for every smaller city on the interior. Bigger cities where most of the population live most likely have more choices.

Whose fucking idea is this? Don't we have more pressing issues to worry about? Especially in the US?

its the internet providers idea and their idea only. basically they lobby their way into politicians pockets and make this bill happen. this literally doesnt help anybody but internet providers. literally nobody else. even mega corporations like google, sony, apple and others are against this because it hurts them as well. this allows, no not just allows, will force monopolies in the internet, it will hurt consumers, it will hurt websites, it will hurt companies and it will hurt the internet. the only two people who benefit from this are internet providers and the whore politicians who lobby for it.

This will really be bad.they slow us down anyway

Bullshit like this will continue in the US until rich people can no longer buy influence by "donating" money.

Why don't they fucking give up? Every time the bill is stubbed they just reintroduce it under a different name.

The people who want it passed have literally spent billions on it already, they're not going to quit until it passes in some way, shape or form. They have invested too much to leave it as it is, they'll keep doubling down until it pays off big for them, they've got the cash.

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

Net Neutrality is just doublespeak for more government control.

These laws did not exist until a couple years ago. Everything was fine. Then, government created a "solution" to a problem that didn't exist. Removal of those laws is good.

As for the scenario shown in the OP, that's just speculation. It also isn't automatically bad. I may like it if I can choose to pay for only portions of the internet, or for faster access to some sites over others.

As scary as all that sounds; it's not going to happen. The internet is one of the main reasons for the huge economic growth we've had the last decades. Making the internet a closed-off network would throw us into a economic depression for decades to come.

Comcast and Verizon throttled Netflix until the blackmail was paid. This isn't speculation, this happened in 2014, everything was not fine.

Much of this stems from monopolies.  I use to have choice for internet, then Time Warner bought everything, raised prices, and gave worse service.  I now have no choice and without the "big bad government" Time Warner is free to do whatever they want to exploit customers. The situation is awful right now, if anything we need to break up these companies, not give them more power.

Ajit Pai can suck a fucking dick. That fucking corporate whore. I'd bitch slap him in the face if I ever saw him.  Only problem is I'd get him confused with any other Indian so I'd probably just bitch slap some random Indian in the face.
