Forums - Sony Discussion - Skyrim VR is my Game of the Year

Skyrim is one of the worst RPGs I ever played. Worse than Beyond the Beyond. VR is also one of the dumbest things I have ever used. From recent VR to the VR I tried in the mid-90s. All I can think of is some people should play far more games and systems.

All I can think is that some people need to climb down off their little soapbox and stop acting like the arbiters of gaming.  It's like watching a pouty child insult everything they don't like simply because they don't like it.

I wouldn't say the way, more like a way, since the traditional way still has its benefits and advantages. And if Elder Scrolls VI is VR-exclusive, that's going to cut a huge number of people out.

You can play it using the DS4, and it is exactly 1 for 1 the traditional version, with the addition of not having your head locked in a vise with blinders on. There is no better way to play Bethesda's version of the game. I will give you the lack of mods though. Hopefully they will come sometime.

I think that developers and publishers will look to push the industry to greener pastures in the future. VR may have the smaller userbase now, but once stuff like Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, and The Elder Scrolls make the leap, it will grow far beyond the userbases we have seen in traditional gaming.

I never wanted Skyrim until recently. Then, suddenly I was torn between whether I wanted it for PSVR or Switch. I'm a huge fan of VR but the draw of having it with me wherever I went was too much to pass up. I couldn't see myself putting in hundreds of hours in VR despite being a fan of the format.

Had the same options, but I choose to go with PSVR. I feel I had the option to have the portable Skyrim expereince for the last year, via remote play on the Vita, and it didn't really draw me in. Being able to play in VR is just too big of a leap over any other version for me. Playing around with it makes me wish Horizon was in VR. Feels so restricted playing The Frozen Wilds now.

And yet... as long as I breath I will never put on one of those VR headsets to play a videogame.

You will be missing out on an expereince that is far and beyond anything you have ever done or ever will do on a traditional display. I read that you like knowing what is going on around you. Would it be possible for you to try once AR/VR headsets arrive? It would be possible for them to quickly show you a live fed of what is going on outside, and headphones have the ability to do the same already.

I have been gaming for nearly 30 years. I have had, or had access to every console since 1989 via either owning them, or someone else living with me having them. I have all of the current platforms in my home right now, and we don't skimp on game purchases, honestly we have more games than we really should. In the last year VR has recaptured a love for gaming that I have not felt since I got my PS1 and N64 in the same year. It has also cast a light on just how limited games on traditional displays and controls have become.

I have played VR almost exclusively from April - September, and jumping back into retro games with COD:WW2, Wolfenstien, Mario Odyssey, and The Frozen Wilds, it is jarring to say the least. It is incredible how helpless and limited the expereince is after you have had your head and hands freed from the shackles.

Yep. Stereoscopic 3D improves graphics way better than 4K, or 60 FPS. Playing a game in 3D vs no 3D is about as big a difference as playing in color vs playing in black and white. Having a natural view, and sound immersion as opposed to looking through a screen, with speakers is a huge difference too. Granted, not all games can be improved by this. Just the ones that use a First Person perspective. But the differences in immersion are huge.

Going from head in a vise 2D 4K/30 - 60fps to Full Freedom 3D 2K/60 - 120fps is an incredible leap. You are right, it is like going from Black and White SD to Color and HD in one single jump. It blows you away when you jump into an X-Wing or a Dodge Viper. It removes the shackles when you play a game like Farpoint or Arizona Sunshine. It is an actual expereince.

Give  it a couple of months, and returing to a traditional display will really change your perspective on things. Even with a 75" 4K screen it is a rough transition back out of that free and beautiful world.

Yeah, I'll probably miss great things. But I'm just that way xD

About those upcoming VR headsets... I'm not sure I'll be satisfied with being able to see my room for a moment. My problem has more to do with the very concept of PLAYING VR. Even if I can check my surroundings from time to time... I can't do it all the  tine while I'm playing and immersed in the game. I don't like that... even if it doesn't make much sense xD

Reported for that comment. Nothing to do with liking something. Has everything to do with bad practices and bad games and cheap ways to get money from people who get suckered into it. I expect many to no get it.  I got the same resistance about 3D, No Mans Sky and plenty of others.

It has everything to do with liking something.  Thousands of people like VR.  Millions of people like Skyrim.  You complaining that those things are "bad" just seems silly.  You don't get to tell other people what they like or don't like.

Don't feed into it.

I'm not a fan of replaying big rpg games, it's like watching a movie with someone next to you continuously spoiling the plot. Skyrim isn't the greatest rpg either.

However as the first full blown rpg in VR, it's simply amazing. Yeah it looks like a ps3 game with low-res textures, last gen lighting, low detail polygon models and plenty pop in everywhere. It does have some things over the ps3 version, more foliage, much much faster load times and most importantly a rock solid fps.

The low detail quickly fades into the background though, and that's coming from playing GT Sport in 4K HDR right before. Being in the world changes the game, also thanks to the excellent motion controls. I was skeptical about the use of the move controllers at first yet now I don't want to play without them. It could still use a patch to enable actual smooth turning (it's now smooth in 10 to 90 degree steps per button click, kinda missing the point there Bethesda...)

Motion controls make the game a new experience. Using the bow as fast as you can draw, aiming spells, hitting two enemies at once, shield bash, simply point at what you want to pick up. It also allows for some 'creative' gameplay. Hide in a cage and stick your arm out for free hits on some high level enemy, hide in a tight space and take out a giant and his mammoth with a volley of arrows, aim carefully between beams or a crack in the wall. Plus sneaking is much more enjoyable when you can actual look around the corner, or lean in through a window to snatch something.

Even though detail is low presence is already amazing. Just try to stare a dog in the eyes in VR. Having the characters actually next to you raises the game, I'm actually paying attention to what they're saying this time.

Anyway I'm blessed with zero discomfort and will be playing it many more hours continuously without problems. GT Sport is out, finishing SMO is in danger, Skyrim VR is the new king.

Good news, smooth turning is coming

Hey everyone! Happy launch day! We're looking into adding smooth turning with the Move Controllers in our next update. Thank you for the support and feedback. Keep it coming!

Next patch should also fix the random drawing of weapons which can cause you to accidentally hit people and well, gets messy fast.

You're selling me...

I literally bought Skyrim on Switch Friday and the lack of mods made me buy it on Xbox One, too(thankfully on sale for $20) I can't afford to buy the same game three times in two days... can I?

Tried PSVR. Felt like the same crap as 20 years ago just better graphics. In fact felt like Wii games. 1989 is still quite a bit after I began playing games.

Dude, we get it. You're really old and grumpy, perhaps even more so than me. And you don't like VR or Skyrim.

Why don't you just let the youngsters enjoy their games the way they want to play them?

Ohhhhh, but you will..   I just hope you have the guts to admit it publicly when you finally do.

Not a chance. I like to be able to see, feel and hear what happens around me while I play videogames. Yeah, it may sound a bit paradoxical that I want all of that with me being essentially in a "different world" (the videogame)... but that's how I like it. It's part of the reason why I don't use headphones to play unless it's absolutely necessary (rhythm games and such).

Also, I don't think it's healthy to put a screen so close to your eyes. Not for a long time at least...

It's so worth it. When the screen is that close even in cinema mode it's just like being in a Theater. And after using the PlayStation Headphones I have a hard time not using them. Hope you give it a chance some time.
