Forums - Sony Discussion - Skyrim VR is my Game of the Year

I made it to lvl 29 already in Skyrim VR. It's simply amazing, I can't stop playing.

It's not perfect but the text is very easily readable, the headset must not be sitting right on your head if the text is blurry. Only for handwritten notes I want to lean in a little bit to make it easy to read them. On the map screen, the text for far away locations is indeed unreadable, move towards it to read it.

For camera setup, best to have the camera a bit off center. If you're right handed put it a bit to the right off you to make it easier for the camera to track your main hand when using the bow. Sitting at a slight angle to the camera when using the bow works as well. The problem is that the tracking can get confused when you hold the moves exactly in line with each other or in front of the headset.

Also make sure the camera is high enough. If I have the camera under the tv and I put my foot rest up, my feet block the line of sight of the move controllers causing bad drift. The alignment of the move controllers can still drift slightly with everything correctly set up, simply give the controller a quick shake to re-align it.

You walk in the direction your left move is pointing in, while you sprint in the direction you are looking at. While sprinting the left move seems to affect the speed you're running at, not the direction. With normal running you can look in a different direction than you're running in as the move works like an analog stick for direction.

While using the bow or blocking with the shield you lose the ability to move effectively as you're using the left move for those actions. My preferred style of play is magic on left hand, sword in right. Bow from a distance. You can fire arrows as fast as you physically can :) Shield is my least favorite due to the movement restrictions, not being able to step backwards and sideways while holding up the shield is a big handicap in close quarter combat. (Perhaps it works better with realistic shield grip unchecked, haven't tried that yet)

Swimming is the most tricky of movements in Skyrim. Underwater you need to mimic a swimming motion. Let go of the triggers before you complete the motion otherwise you stop dead each time. Getting back to the surface after exploring the trench last night was still quite a work out.

So I have just got this yesterday, having played about an hour, at this point I'm going to say I really regret spending that £300 on it.

I've tried all the adjustments, and the resolution just looks terrible to me, I can barely read the writing, and I had an eye test just 2 months ago and the optician said my eyesight is perfect.. So either I'm doing something wrong, my headset is broken or you are all raving about ps2 style graphics.

Honestly it looks worse than the original release on the Xbox 360..

The move Controls are clunky, although I'm sure with time I would get used to them, however the head tracking seems permanently out, I'm pressing the move button and it's advancing me 45degrees to my left, constantly.

The fact you can't walk backwards seems a major flaw and obstacle in this game, and for half the time I've been playing so far, one of my weapons (dual wielding) has been floating 2 meters in front of me (although handy for hitting people running towards you, it destroys immersion)

Perhaps there's something im doing wrong (completely open to that possibility given I'm a VR newb) maybe my headset doesn't work (brand new, in a box with sticky clear disc seals attached, and all packaging correct, twist tied wires in individual plastic etc) or I just don't suit VR.

I have never in my life been motion sick before, but the tracking issue (running at an angle to fov) seems to be giving me it!

Just one thing that might be too obvious. The headsets sold outside the US had a protective piece of plastic on the lenses for shipping. You sure you're not trying to look through that :)

Perhaps play the demo of job simulator first to make sure everything is working properly. Skyrim in VR does look like a last gen game, you can't really expect much better having to render two high fov 60fps views instead of one narrow 30fps view. It looks better than the ps3 version, much more vegetation. After a while you get used to the lower resolution, give it a bit more than an hour. It took me 5 to 10 to get comfortable running around and navigating the menus with the move.

And you move in the direction the left move is pointing at. So if that's one is not working properly, you can't move properly either. You should be able to walk backwards by pointing the move backwards.

Tried PSVR. Felt like the same crap as 20 years ago just better graphics. In fact felt like Wii games. 1989 is still quite a bit after I began playing games.

I'm convinced this is a parody lol. I can't help but imagining a cranky old dude complaining about todays youth and their technological toys.

Thanks for all of the helpful replies,

I had done the eye distance calibration, but not redone the light calibration, on both the frontal view and left view the camera had real trouble detecting the bottom left light, it now seems to be tracking it a LOT better.

I hadn't actually figured out that the move direction is the distance you move in, so I'm quite glad I came here looking for a little help before I gave up on it! Certainly the motion sickness has reduced now I'm not running off at tangents!!!

I haven't used it beyond feeling sick, and I also guessed it would take some acclimation time, third time playing now has been a LOT better. Although still leaving me a little queasy (I have also been unwell the last two days so I have acknowledged that as a source of the problem also)

All in all, it's better, but it's going to take some time, it's good, not BOTW good, but then what do you expect from a primarily Nintendo player!! :P

Comparing the gotg with a mediocre last gen RPG, what do you expect :) BotW in VR would kill me from sleep deprivation!

It speak volumes that I can't stop replaying Skyrim while I already did everything in the game before on a 70 hour play through on ps3. Okami HD couldn't entice me back and while BotW is the best in ages, I won't go back to it for DLC or another play through. Replaying epic RPGs is something that's just not fun for me. VR turns it into an altogether different experience.

Brave move to get your vr legs in Skyrim with full motion. I think you'll be good for everything else if you can stomach that. One last tip, don't play in the complete dark, leave some light on. You might think it should be able to track better in the dark yet I suspect the camera to go to high exposure causing the lights from the headset and move controllers to bloom. Low to medium ambient light seems to work best.

Skyrim doesnt have the best graphics of the VR games yet but it definitly look way better then ps2 games. Graphics is nothing that makes a game for me though. Mario Odyssey and Zelda BOTW are one of my fav. games this years and both dont have great graphics either.

Have you set your IPD in the settings?

And make sure you wear the headset correctly. If you wear it wrong, everything will be blurry (there is just a small sweet spot where its sharp).

Are you playing on standard PS4 or Pro? Graphics are obviously better on the PS4 Pro, so if graphics are that important to you, you may consider a upgrade.

If you need better graphics (also on OG PS4) try games like:

- Call of Duty Jackal Aussalt (free)

- Robinson the Journey

- Resident Evil 7

- Star Wars Battlefront Xwing VR Mission

- Bound (currently free with PS+, has a VR mode)

- Rigs: Mechanized Combat League

Those games definitly looking way better then everything that was released on ps3.

Well I've been hitting vr world's since my last post, and my gods does it show the tech off, there's a ways to go before I think the system will work properly for mega rpgs, but wow, I will definitely grab some of those other games, and thanks for the pointers.

This is a first use of the wii moment, getting new gaming styles always blows me away.

And it's the first time I've ever got my fiancee to play the ps4, and she loved it (worlds) which vastly improves my thoughts on the costs :)

I have a standard ps4, won't upgrade to the pro, as a rule I hate mid lifespan upgrades, and won't buy them out of principle.

If I miss games as a result so be it, they should be releasing the upgrades as new systems should they be required for future games, kinda 3ds/new 3ds situation.

And as a whole graphics don't bother me, entertainment does, and this is the first time the Playstation has matched a Nintendo console for some time!

Anyway I'll stop hijacking the thread with my newb VR experiences, thanks for the help everyone, really really appreciate it.

You're the perfect example of how VR doesn't make the best first impression. Imagine you had only played it like that at a friend's for half an hour and no more.

I have yet to try VR Worlds, so much to play so little time! My kids love the menu screen, just knocking the different balls around with the controller. They tried the actual ball game in there for 5 minutes, then back to the menu screen to mess around...

Anyway I hope you enjoy the rest of your stay in Skyrim.

Check uploadvr for reviews, they are generally hard to find for psvr games. I've got over 60 games for psvr, some have never even been mentioned in the gaming media. Also https://uploadvr.com/best-psvr-games/ A personal favorite is Rez Infinite, it's just something else in VR, especially the newly added Area X.

@Ivant

if you haven't already you should download the free Playroom VR app, it has a few mini-games you can play couch-multiplayer with non-headset users with

and I heard good things about the free Rec Room beta aswell

@Ivant

I recommend Star Trek Bridge Crew and Eagle Flight if you're interested in new gaming experiences! Also you should try all the stuff from the two demo discs (demos are on PSN as well). Particularly Moss, if you like Nintendo games. Such a cute game!

I recommend Davestation VRs YouTube channel. He plays almost every new PSVR game....drunk! It’s pretty entertaining lol Just remember not to take his opinion too seriously as he, you know, is drunk haha, but he mostly shows off the games in a way so you can make up your own mind.

You're definitely right about VR...it’s a game changer and opens up new and fresh gameplay ideas, something gaming has needed for quite some time now.
