Not exactly a historian, but I know a decent amount about WWII. I don't recall hangings being a commonly seen thing in any country involved in the war at all. Shame no context was provided

You should really google more.

You could literally type ww1 hanging, ww2 hanging, Vietnam hanging, just about any war followed by the word hanging and get a tonne of photographed examples...

I know about the Nuremburg and soviet hangings, but those aren't black people. Why would I ask the question if I didn't google it?

The game takes place in '44-46, so that's what I'm focusing on specifically. I haven't found any specific instances of countries hanging people who weren't of a high rank in the military.

No... If you actually play the game and find the alleged scene, the person who is hanging is not Black at all. They just kindof look like it from one specific angle, due to poor lighting and textures.

And even if it was, so? That spot in the game is outside of a French village that has been occupied by German soldiers, who murdered some of the civilians to keep the rest in line. You come across because you and your platoon are moving through, pushing the German troops out. There’s no painting it as “racism@, unless you’re upset that they’re portraying Nazis as evil.

Have a read of this:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persecution_of_black_people_in_Nazi_Germany

Also explains why some of the Nazis in the game are black, too.

Personally, going off of the picture I think it's pretty clearly only the left body that you could firmly say was that of a black male, and even then only if you do so looking at the head/hair, the right body doesn't show any characteristics, other than having the same shade skin, but that's also the same shade as the players hand too.

I think it's a stretch either way, and just being used to have a reason for some people to flip their shit and be offended, while blacks were never persecuted in the same scope as Jews, it was obvious from their treatment, especially if non-german, that they were seen as inferior too, so if one or both of them hanging were unquestionably black, it wouldn't be unrealistic.

I have more of an issue with them removing the swastika to be honest, because that shits all over their defense of depicting realistic or graphic scenes such as this, why include it but not include the swastika? No sane person plays a ww2 game, sees a swastika and things hey that's cool, and people looking out for it clearly know what it looks like and what it stands for.

Wife sent me the image because I bought the game for my 15yr old, but I am not sure if the photo:

1. Is depicting random european folks

2. Is depicting light-skinned black folks.

Of course this is starting to hit FB and will hit all the normal US political/racial fires.

I don't play the game and can't find a good quality image. Anyone have one?

More importantly....you bought this game for a 15yr old? Tsk tsk

I suppose it makes sense considering their belief in eugenics, but I always assumed Germans were neutral or only partially disliked African Americans.

Was a good read honestly; feels better knowing more about the topic. Thanks.

As I said, you should really google more, since I have no intention of posting those pics here. Nazis were hanging people quite a bit - maybe not as...productive...as shooting or gassing, but, visually, body hanging from the streetlight or from balcony is quite fear inducing...I'm guessing.

As for particular years ('44) in particular country (France), look up Tulle massacre.

Now, it is pretty much beyond ridiculous that we're discusing this topic in this context, since this is about some special snowflake taking offense with it - as I said, in Europe of all the places, where Nazis killed millions.

They didn't like anyone who wasn't Arian. Black people just weren't a big issue for them because they were very uncommon in Germany.

The most offensive thing about this is people's ignorance about war, in this case WW2. I suppose Jews hanging from a tree would be okay in their book?

I am 100% black... and I find issues like this as bullshit.

The argument is lost to me the second you start saying why are they showing them hanging black people. If you are gonna have a problem, then have a problem with them hanging ppl period. Not only when they are black.

So what are we saying here? Its ok to hang people as long as they are white?

superchunk said:
To be clear... I don't think it would be offensive regardless of the color or race of the people. Its a game about war and atrocities of war. There is some realism to be expected.

Yeah... pretty much this. How can people be offended by a game about WW2 that portrais itself as somehwat historically accurate?
