Nintendo is just getting started.

I'd put both 2002 and 2007 above it. 2007 gets plenty of attention as is, but 2002 was a fantastic year as well. A Zelda that I would still consider better than BotW in Wind Waker, Metroid Prime (which I would consider to be superior to SMO based on what I've played of the latter so far), Metroid Fusion, Mario Sunshine, and Ruby/Sapphire.

I think I could go either way on whether 2013 is better than 2017 as well: FE: Awakening, ALBW, Pikmin 3, and Dual Destinies + Wonderful 101 if we're allowed to count third party exclusives.

In terms of sales, not a chance. They're not touching those early Wii/DS years. In terms of image? Oh hell yes. In 2015-2016, Nintendo was viewed as a kiddy company and a joke. However, in 2017, they really took steps to turn that around. For me, the main turning points were these:

1. Breath of the Wild actually treating its players like they can maybe figure things out on their own. To me, this title represents them completely changing their development focus into something more, and why this game will always win for me in the BotW vs SMO battle. It felt like a game made with the hardcore gamer in mind. Compare this to Pokemon Sun and Moon. Great games, but STOP TREATING ME LIKE A LITTLE KID WHO'S NEVER PICKED UP A CONTROLLER BEFORE!

2. Letting The Binding Of Isaac onto the Switch. Finally, Nintendo embracing the bloodier, more controversial side of gaming. Due to the religious themes, this game would've NEVER been allowed on a Nintendo console before 2017. This sent the message to me that Nintendo was finally willing to branch out, give us options in terms of what to play rather than just focusing on the Nintendo way.  Their promotion of Doom is a continuation of this new direction.

3. Changing up their advertising. I remember when me and my family were all watching TV and the Double Yoshi Exploshi commercial came on. My parents looked at me funny, asking "Hey, isn't that one of those Nintendo games you still play?" It was so embarrassing that I almost just gave up on Nintendo entirely. Literally, I almost threw away my 3ds. Thankfully, no 3dses or games were harmed, due to me wanting MH4 and still being into Alpha Sapphire. Thank you, Switch commercials, for fixing this. Now even my friends who said they outgrew Nintendo want the system.

Wind Waker is my least favorite mainline Zelda (yes I even liked Skyward sword better), SMS is my least favorite 3D Mario (M64, SMG1, SMG2 were better). But yes, Metriod prime was f-ing the shit. That game was mindblowing for its time.

The but the key difference is back then Nintendo was still making games for gamers. 2 of the 3 (between Metriod, Zelda, and Mario) were considered letdowns at the time. Where as in 2017 no one was expecting much from Nintendo... and then turned around and delivered what I think to be 2 of the top 10 games of all time.

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

No, I think the NES with it's 90% marketshare domination was Nintendo's "finest hour"... but 2017 should be pretty great.

considering how BAD they have been in this past decade it is not much of a challenge to up the standard when they were so low already, I m not saying they haven't released impressive games this year, just comparing how poorly they treated their fan base and how arrogant they have been in these past 10 years, so this year could be considered as an olive branch to the gaming community and a major course correction.
