Well, I don't play online on consoles. I basically only have a PS4 for the 1st party single player games. All my online gaming history have been on PC since the early 2000s, and VPN is essential if your region gets cockblocked or the servers get shut down. (Lineage 1 was another game I liked but their servers were shut down in america due to low popularity, and I have played it via VPN for quite some time).

Out of interest, have you ever actually tried using foreign servers before or do you always use a VPN first?

It still seems strange to me that you say games are unavailable because your local servers are shut down. Yet I've played games on US, European and Japanese servers in both the UK and Japan without issue (well, maybe a bit more lag but that's all).

It depends on whether the service is region exclusive or not. Black Desert was another example, it had North America only servers when it came to west, anybody but NA players can acccess it. Latin American/EU/ASIAN players were unable to play it legally (only via VPN).

Lineage 2 NA is an example of a service open to anybody worldwide, although it is meant to be NA only, they don't enforce it like they did with Black Desert NA.

I mean, maybe it's changed but considering wikipedia lists it as having the same release date for NA and EU and this thread seems to suggest it's quite easy to play on the NA servers while being in Europe I'm not really sure how accurate what you're saying is. https://community.blackdesertonline.com/index.php?threads/playing-in-na-from-eu.10542/

It was way back when it lauched over here. the intention was making NA/LA/EU only servers. But they changed their minds.

But Lineage 2 Classic EU is EU region only, people from outside play it via VPN like me.

If they think they will make more money milking the american's, and assuming the american's don't turn around aswell. Still, it's giving up your second biggest market and millions on sales. I doubt that ends up as being worth it.

Their hands are tied here. If the EU commision gives the ruling we all expect, publishers are gonna have to pay the piper. They will have no choice. Will either face gambling taxation and regulation or will change their game design. Both of wich are good resolutions for consumers.

Considering there have been numerous cases in the past of companies altering their games in order to release it in a region, it seems pretty clear just refusing to make the changes and foregoing all those sales isn't worth being stubborn about it.

Where are you getting the EU stuff from though? OP only says Belgium and when Pok mentioned the Dutch investigation he specifically referred to Dutch law in relation to that rather than EU law.

The sales of goods is regulated by the EU. If this is deemed gambling by the regulatory bodies of the BE and NL, it will have to be brought to the EU to review the regulation order.

Basically, it just takes one to decide it and bring it to the union for potentially everyone get on board with it.

Though, you know... there's law technicalities i am not privy to. But i believe that is how it goes.

They need to make money somehow or you think servers are free xD

Not every free to play is cancer. There is warframe , League ( now they ruined it with a type of lootboxes too...

Durrr? Im aware of their need to keep their business venture going. That doesnt make this business model less detrimental.

My dear lord. I don't know if I should laugh or cry. This is the most horrible thing I've seen in a game since Duke Nukem Forever...

This was bound to happen as games move closer and closer to gambling cabinets. Unchecked we will probably not see any difference between them anymore in 10 years.

Lootboxes as they are implemented in certain games are nothing more than heavily overpriced micro transactions that prey on the weak. Without regulation it's only going to get worse.
