Pretty much.

I'm genuinely surprised that their reviews are on Metacritic.

I mean... What else are they going to give it? I’m aware most Nintendo games are of very high quality, but ever since their whole crusade, from a couple years, of deciding who gets to talk about and play their games online, it’s very questionable whether there is an underlying agenda there from most big name gaming outlets.

Go look up some of NL's reviews of other first party Nintendo games (just about anything on the Wii U from 2016 for starters) and you all will see how wrong you are.

"Oh my gawd, a site with Nintendo in the name gives a game series that always scores well everywhere a 10/10, clearly it's biased even though I know nothing of how it reviews other games!"

Ultra sun/moon is basically your S/M review plus .2-.5

I enjoyed the games, but once again it's clear the 3ds hardware limited them from truly unleashing this gen's potential. It's good, yet leaves you desiring for the game to have more.

Haven't tried online yet (don't want to be banned), but overall almost everything else is fine. My personal score is about 8.2/10. A 10/10 is way too much for this game honestly.

Well, I did play the game, so in all honesty I think my review is pretty fair. It isn't bashing Nintendo for things they can't control (like the graphics) and takes into consideration that it's a sequel

I figure Ultra Sun/Moon are also good games, but seeing as I already have the original, I'll probably pass on these versions.

I got it since a forum I browse leaked it. Won't share for obvious reasons, but personally I wouldn't have bought it. Throughout the game I felt like it was a change not large enough to justify buying it. I haven't touched the post game though, so I can't comment on that.

Why does this have a thread?

I blame the lack of a metacritic thread for the game.

Putting your foot in your mouth after getting exposed and dragged, if I've seen such a thing. Wow.

Anyway, don't know if the games are worth 10/10. Haven't played them or the originals, but I'm glad I decided to wait and now I get to buy an enhanced version of Moon.

NintendoLife is usually very, very objective with their reviews. Yes, they might support Nintendo's first party games even if they're average... But they're not afraid to give a low score if the game merits it. Although their generosity usually goes to well made third party games too, they gave some nice scores to many Wii and Wii U that (in my opinion) were overlooked or underappreciated. I trust them.

Arent there a PlayStation/Xbox equivalent to Nintendo Life? Hell I remember that one time a PS France reviewer gave Uncharted 2 a 21/20 score.

There is, and like I said, "bias is bias" their reviews shouldn't be counted either.

Hmm, care to list just a couple? 'cause all I'm seeing is 100/100 scores.

Just about every mainline Nintendo game this year alone has received top marks. I mean, shit, even ARMS got a 9/10.

A 10 no. Did they add back in the National Dex. If they didn't. It can't be a 10.

Is there the slightest possibility that the reviewer honestly thought ARMS is a 9/10 game?

How many games have they given 10/10 this year?

This is key, tells you whether they're just generally generous scorers or whether they think the game is truly exceptional.

Doesn't look like anyone answered the question in the thread, so I went and found out for myself:

2017:
Total reviews - 286 (a substantial minority are for small retro digital titles though)
10/10s - 8 (Zelda Switch, Zelda WiiU, MK8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2, Metroid: Samus Returns, Axiom Verge, Super Mario Odyssey, Pokemon Ultra)
9/10s - 44

Wow, they're not even trying.

They aren't mainline games though, they're spinoffs, and terrible ones at that. There's a big difference between a game like Ultra Sun and Amiibo Festival.

Fact is, when it comes down to it, every big Nintendo release gets top marks from Nintendo Life, and it's mainly due to bias.

I don't see what's so bad about Nintendo Life.

For 2,700 reviews, this publication has graded:

47% higher than the average critic
24% same as the average critic
29% lower than the average critic

On average, this publication grades 11.4 points lower than other critics. (0-100 point scale)
