Resident Evil: Revelations

  • Nintendo 3DS
  • 2012
  • Survival Horror
  • Capcom

A Nintendo system where the best game on it is not from a first party, not developed in-house by Nintendo themselves, that's a rare occurrence. The 3DS handheld however is such a system. 'Resident Evil: Revelations' takes the system to the next level pushing visuals that didn't seem possible.

The game is a return to the series' roots, taking place in dark, abandoned and confined spaces of a cruise ship with the gameplay scale tipped more towards the horror aspect once again. Being a survival horror game, the game has it's fair share of tense moments and a lot of scares. Like much of the series, there's a real B-movie story in the game, which is quite entertaining and keeps you going. This story is presented in small episodes, which are perfect for shorter handheld gaming sessions.

The game's design still allows itself to mix things up and every now and then, a faster paced, more action oriented section takes place. Progression is as such that when the player gets further into the game, more of the ship becomes accessible due to the player unlocking new areas in each 'Episode', the game's variant on traditional levels presented as if it was a television-series. It's a shame the second game didn't make it to the 3DS for some reason, but that just meant I had to get a PlayStation Vita for it.

I completely forgot this existed. Now I have to find a copy.

As this game is ported to many platforms, it should be easy. In a few days it releases for Switch too. But yes, I recommend it too. it might even be on my list too.

Been away for a few days, and I my list got behind. No one guessed by #41 which was Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. And I didn't get a chance to give a clue to #39 which was New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Here are my next few clues.

#38 Two huge franchises that seem very different came together to make this amazing PS2 game. It was the first in the series which spawned several sequels, though many of the sequels didn't get a proper number.

#37 This SNES game managed to become twice the size of what would normally be possible by telling the story in such a way that they could reuse most of the overworld art assets.

#36 This PC game lets you get as close to the D&D experience as possible through adventure creation and even allowing the GM to change the adventure on the fly.

#35 This is the first SNES entry in a very prolific franchise. It has arguably the best controls for your main weapon compared to every other entry in the franchise.

#34 This PS2 RPG has a large immersive world, and it was the first single player game in the series where the characters did not go to a separate battle screen. However a few fans criticized the game for being too much like an MMO.

Ah, because you were away a game from me stayed unguessed.

#38: Kingdom Hearts?

#36: DM? You mean this has multiple players and one assumes the role of DM?

#34: Final Fantasy XII?

Well the third movie The Last Crusade obviously, which I know also has a game, but I thought The Infernal Machine was the Indy game that's looked favorably upon. Maybe not, I don't know though, never played any.

36 Yes.  Actually you can play this game single player or multiplayer and can choose to have another player as DM in either case.

Well, seems this is the first hard one. I'll give a second hint before it's time to post the game.

From metro to cathedral fills the entire screen.

#37 - Hint 2
A screen filled with offices, condos, hotel rooms and shops.

#37 Uncharted 2 Among Thieves

These days a lot of games will cover multiple gameplay elements. Notable examples include BotW, Horizon Zero Dawn, Tomb Raider (Reboot), and Assassin's Creed. There was a time though that you couldn't do certain things in a game unless it was specific to that genre. Want to climb in a shooter? Too bad, this is a shooter, not a platformer. Want to play stealthy in an action adventure game? Too bad. Well along came Uncharted merging genre specific mechanics together. Franchises like Horizon, Assassin's Creed, Tomb Raider, BotW, and The Last of Us owe a lot to the Uncharted series. Uncharted 2 is the best of the series IMO, and the multiplayer is really great. Doing stealth takedowns, platforming, and having a general freedom of movement really opens your basic shooter up to possibilities. I know this game is starting to show it's age with the poor aiming mechanics, but they fixed that in the PS4 trilogy pack, so just play that. Also, the setpieces in this game are bonkers.
