Ok, here's a short write-up of the three latest games on my list, and after that hints for the next three.
#41
Rogue Galaxy
Previous Year's Rank: 49
I originally bought Rogue Galaxy simply because I was looking for some JRPGs to play on the PS2, and this one happened to catch my attention. I didn't really know what to expect from the game at the time, but it's safe to say I was pleasantly surprised. I was originally drawn by the game's visual style, but underneath that I found a genuinely great game with an interesting story and characters, and a battle system that felt very different from any other game in the genre, in a good way.
#40
Soul Calibur II
Previous Year's Rank: 35
This is the game that made me a fan of the Soul Calibur franchise. I had previously played one of the games in the series, but had never actually owned any. I saw a glowing review for SC II in a Finnish video game magazine, and as a huge fighting game fan decided to get it based on that review. Today the series is my second favourite in the genre after Tekken, and although the latest game didn't really hold me as well as the prior titles had, it's still among the best in its genre.
#39
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
Previous Year's Rank: 34
The game that introduced me to both Level-5 as a developer, and Dragon Quest as a franchise (None of the earlier games had ever been officially released in Europe). Dragon Quest VIII was, and still is, an absolutely massive game, with a ridiculous amount of content and countless secrets to discover in the beautiful world. In terms of visual style, it is still one of the best looking games I have ever played, and the combination of the old-school elements with some modern updates made it one of the best games on the PS2.
Hints:
#38: An alternate history WW2, that sprung into its own sub-series in this famous RTS franchise.
#37: An entry into a classic NES platformer series that introduced a charged version of the main characters weapon into the series.
#36 A licensed superhero game, the second in its series. Expanded upon its predecessor by moving the game from an island into a walled section of a famous comic book city.
