game #7

Hint 1: After a god was killed a few years ago, it happens that childs are born without a soul.

Hint 2: It was financed by one of the most successful crowdfunding-campaigns.

Hint 3: This RPG was the spiritual successor of one of the games I already had on the list.

Hint 4: Some arcane mystics fill the childs born without soul with the soul of an animal. This backfires.

Hint 5: Has killing the god have shattered the Pillars of the world for all Eternity?

game #6

Hint 1: You explore the lands you live: the bodies of dead or sleeping gods.

Hint 2: For reasons unknown it was difficult to get this game release in the US, although in europe a release with an english translation already existed.

Guessed by Slarvax: Xenoblade Chronicles.

game #5

Hint 1: One of the most successful launch-titles ever for a new console.

Guessed by S.Peelman: Zelda Breath of the Wild

game #4

Hint 1: This turn-based strategy game is one of the most successful entries in the series, although it got criticized because one gameplay element of the series could be deactivated for a playthrough to make it easier/more accessible.

Guessed by Flilix: Fire Emblem Awakening

Hints to my #4 and #3 games.

#4 In North America, this spinoff game was released just a few months after the series' most successful entry.
Hint 2: The story of this game is about two childhood friends who took two very different paths as adults.

#3 “Since man first walked upright, he has looked to the stars and wondered, ‘Are we alone in this cold corner of space? If something is out there, would it be friend…or foe?’ What would this Earth man think if he could see a desperate space ship, fleeing at a speed faster than imagination? What would he think if he saw the impact of powerfully potent neutronic missiles upon its fragile frame? What would he make of the strange pod that ejected from the ruined remains, just in time to avoid its mysterious inhabitant’s destruction? And would he gape in wonder at the dozen or so strange canisters that burst from its hold and fell towards the atmosphere of our guileless globe? What emotion would pass through his mind as he observed these selfsame containers as they passed through our atmosphere and fell upon the surface of an unsuspecting metropolis? So many questions and so few answers…until now dear viewers…until now….”

4 kind of sounds like Kingdom Hearts.

Kingdom Hearts was a great game, but I already put it at #38 on my list.  At least you know what kind of games I like.

More hints!

game #8

Hint 1: Transhumanism is a revolution.

Hint 2: You decide if you fight, sneak around guys, find alternative paths, talk you way in and out, hack and so on.

8 is Dues Ex?

Which one? I hinted which one.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution?

As The_Liquid_Laser guessed my game #8 is Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Transhumanism is a topic covered sparsely in entertainment. This happened mostly in books, especially following Neuromancer from William Gibson. That also led to Shadowrun. But I don't see much recent novels covering this. In movies some old movies like Robocop had this topic. Nowadays only some Anime (like Blame!) dive into that. And that although human enhancements through technology are actually very possible these days and this might change our societies in the next decades.

In gaming as far as I know only the Deus Ex series has Transhumanism as a theme. It also follows other ideas of Gibsons novels, so we have a dark future controlled by international corporations that form the world for their profits.

But that alone wouldn't make a good game, Human Revolution is not only a good game because it makes a pretty good plot out of the basic Gibson-like thematics. It is because the game gives you a lot of freedom to decide. Every problem can be solved in multiple ways. You stand before a closed door? Hack it. Or find a ventilation shaft to crawl through. Or talk the guard into it to let you in. There are always multiple solutions. And that freedom feels just great as a player. I as a player form the adventure, not the game-creator.

I played the Directors Cut at the WiiU and I cannot say if that was the case at original release, but the game had a high level of polish too. I encountered practically no glitches. For a complex game like that I can appreciate it.

Anno 1602

  • Windows PC
  • 1998
  • Construction & Management Simulation
  • Sunflowers

The second game in the 'Anno' series on the list, and the first of the series in general. A real classic among me, a good friend and my mother. In the past, we used to play this game all the time in multiplayer. As such, this is without a doubt, my most played multiplayer game ever. In fact, my friend and me can still play this from time to time.

While the objective is more or less the same, being a much older game than 'Anno 1404' earlier in the list, gameplay is much simpler. In 'Anno 1602's' case though, simpler really is even better. The seamlessness and ease of managing resources and goods to build your city is unparalleled. In another area, combat, the simpler nature is a godsend compared to the more bloated mechanics of later games. Combat is secondary of course, and to be avoided if possible, because the objective is to just make a city as wealthy as possible and 'out-prosper' your rivals.

Interestingly enough, even though it's never mentioned in the game, the manual or the intro-cutscene, I'm pretty sure the game references the 'Golden Age' of my country judging by the architecture of the buildings, the nautical theme, the trading of spices and the exact year "1602" being an important one. Though it has no bearing whatsoever on the excellence of the game, for a Dutch person, that's a nice extra.

Today it's second nature, and I think my hand itself even evolved into something that can easily push these button combinations over the years, but in the beginning it took me a while to figure out that you have to press the shift-key while building walls to stack them.
