Forums - Sales Discussion - GTA 5 Ships 85 Million Copies, Surpassing Wii Sports

Take-Two today reported earnings for the quarter ended September 30, and among the notable takeaways is that Grand Theft Auto V continues to soar. The open-world action game has now shipped an astonishing 85 million copies since its launch in September 2013. That's up from the 80 million shipment figure that Take-Two disclosed in May.

Take-Two says GTA V is now the "all-time best-selling video game" ever in the US, based on revenue and units sold, across digital and physical platforms. The game has now surpassed Wii Sports, which sold 82.83 million units worldwide. Notably, Wii Sports was a pack-in game for the Wii, while GTA V is and has been sold on its own.

GTA Online is also a huge hit. The game had its "best quarter yet" in terms of the money that it brought in, Take-Two said, though it did not share any specific revenue figures.

GTAV is the best-selling game in the US? Is that including Minecraft, Angry Birds and Tetris?

I might be the only person who hasn't played this game nor Minecraft and I never will.

It will ship 100 million, the holiday season will help it get there soon.

Proud to be a Californian.

Based on revenue and units sold...So yeah revenue sure , if units sold it must have sold like 55-60 million in the USA?  Considering MC did surpass 122 million last februari (but no new numbers yet).

And that high of a ratio for the US just doesn't sound reasonable to me.

How many units sold in the US?  And, since we're talking about a game that was released on multiple platforms and re-released through multiple generations, I start to doubt that it has outsold other multiplatform/multigenerational games like Pac-Man, Super Mario Bros, or Tetris (170 million worldwide).

And not a single piece of additional storyline content released during that time, while GTA online is constantly updated and just so happens to feature microtransactions. Kinda shows where the focus of the company has shifted to in recent years.

Sure GTA V has been in bundles, though bundles don't account for 99% of it's sales like Wii Sports.
