You should try out some Linux distribution. For example, Linux Mint is relatively lightweight, relative good-looking, and quite easy to use. You can also try it before installing via a USB stick (or a DVD, which is probably what you'll have to use considering the age of your PC). You're almost asking to get hacked by using Windows XP these days. You'll probably be lucky anyway and get away with it, but I certainly wouldn't take the chance.
