Forums - Gaming Discussion - Super Mario Odyssey Sales Prediction and Platformer Biggest Franchises Sales

Nintendo confirmed that the recently released and critically acclaimed Super Mario Odyssey is the fastest-selling title in the Super Mario platformer series. The previous record holder was New Super Mario Bros. Wii , which released in 2009.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii has sold 28.4M according to VGC. While Super Mario Odyssey LT sales looks promising, I don't see them reach that number for the simple reason that 3D Mario never sell as much as 2D Mario:

That being said, I predict Odyssey will be the best selling 3D Mario game and will outsell both Super Mario Galaxy (11.36M) Super Mario 64 (11.89M) by quite a margin. I personnaly think it may sell in the 15M-20M range.

While looking at other platformer franchises, Super Mario Bros. is in its own league as none of the other main platformer franchises are selling near as much*:

*VGC numbers, digital sales not included.

Also, it would be interesting to see how much a new Donkey Kong game can do on the Switch.

What are your thoughts?

No need to say these are the most popular platformer franchises from top of my head and I could not have included them all into one single graph...

Any prediction?

I think 15-20 million sounds like a fair call from what we've seen so far.

One of the analysts at the last investor's meeting, actually thinks it will do 10m by as early as March next year. So it could honestly have the potential to even go past 20m pretty easily.

15-17 million is my prediction.

Variations of this thread have already been made, that may be why you're not seeing too many predictions in here.

However, you've got nice graphs, at least.

10M by next March would be incredible given the install base. This would mean an attach rate over the 75% mark.

Between 14-15 million lifetime...

It wil sell 28% of the total userbase.

What about Super Mario 64 DS? Shouldn't that be included for the total sales of the game?
