The almighty @TruckOSaurus has updated the featured section on the front page. We saw some suggestions and complaints that featured articles disappear too quickly and that people who only visit the site every few days will miss stuff. So we have added two more featured articles on the front page and added a small gap between them to make them standout a bit more.

The updated featured section on the front page should look like this for everyone, even if you are using Dark or Blue modes:

This looks so much better, to be completely honest.

I'm happy Truck was willing to do it and he got it done pretty quickly. Other ideas we have will take a lot longer to get done.

On our end as well. I have a few Mod tools I'm trying to add (though it won't take any serious code to do), and further refinement of the Forum Rules (less bloat).

Finally, opting for the golden rule?

OOTL, what happened to the Global Weekly Charts for software? it's no longer up-to-date.

anyone know how where I can get 2019 data > . >

Let's get that Platinum/Diamond/Onyx supporter status going. All I want it for is more voting power for dupe comments. +8 for one, -8 for another. And such and such. I get my jollies and the staff gets new socks. Everybody wins.

I've never really noticed before, but avatars are vertically cropped on mobile, cutting out the bottom, even on one's profile page. Is there a reason for this?

Would it be possible to show how many visualizations a thread received? It is a silly thing but I think putting that into the threads might incentivize people into making more, because that way they know just how many people they are reaching.

I'm constantly getting "The connection has timed out" and "problem loading page."

I'm checking my notifications, visiting a thread, leaving a thread, posting at a thread etc. Some times I just have to refresh/try again one. Some times it is two, three or even four times.

Feels like it happened when we switched to https.

This is definitely a thing I've started to notice too but I see it way more at home than at work.  So I initially chalked it up to something on my end.

Pings, trace routes and MTRs go through just fine so I'm guessing it's a DNS related problem.

My first though is you are tripping the DOS protection if you have too many tabs active at once to the site or increased the concurrent connection count on your browser.  That could lock you out for a little while...  What browser(s) are giving the difficulty?

Here are some of the IPs throttled by the firewall the last week:

1116 194.109.11.146
1339 101.176.153.176
1423 31.18.255.50
1755 88.11.79.188
1860 86.3.245.28
1897 99.253.84.27
2845 37.228.234.253
3755 93.245.98.115
4164 89.182.23.124
5471 183.132.252.94
5611 89.182.57.153
9560 107.204.245.87
85348 100.11.233.177
100207 18.205.51.87

Checking 107.204.245.87... as example, requested over 140 items in a second, and 730 items in a minute. The rate of requests isn't the issue, it's when too many concurrent connections from the same IP....

Maybe I can do something to increase it for authenticated users.

I am not sure how liking works exactly, but is the browser doesn't use persistent connections it could increase the sensitivity. Having multiple browsers (or even the same browser with another window in incognito) can also create more connections. When you tried chrome, did you shut down firefox? If not, then it would only add to the simultaneous connections if firefox was causing an issue.

I just added a rule to whitelist active logged in IPs for 25 minutes. Let me know if that helps. It will not help anonymous users...and I may have to remove that whitelist or maybe have a different limit, but any bad activity can be tracked back to a user...

I did have firefox open while trying out chrome. I'll pay attention to any connections lost in the next 25 minutes or so.

edit: I've opened every thread I could. I thumbs up a lot of stuff. I opened like 10+ websites at the same time. Not one issue.

So I'm guessing this proves something?

Mainly that firefox (at least as you have it setup) is evil and opens up too many idle connections to the server.

Looks like firefox will even preemptively create connections before it even has something to request of the server "just in case" you click on something.  That makes the vgchartz server defensive...
