A Like button...this won't end well...

Oh no, I'm not going to get any likes on my posts. My feelings of self worth are going to be shattered on a daily basis.

I don't mind the like button, as long as a dislike button never appears, of course.

Please excuse my bad English.

Currently gaming on a PC with an i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

Having it for those who want it is fine. Just tell me how to turn it off. I read and post in the forums for discussion. Not to see what opinion or side of an argument is the most shared by the forum users. Posts which say "I agree" have no value in discussions. There should be something added or further expounded upon. The meat is the discussion itself. The like button distracts from that.

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

I think it makes for a worse environment, it's just very anti-forum. The cool thing about forums is how you get loads of interesting in-depth posts on stuff and it's nice to read through them all. When there's likes on stuff though, it just makes for an environment where people post "like-bait" if you will, and even for the people just reading, it gets hard to avoid the "skip through everything and read only top comments" mentality too.

I might agree with you on the "anti forum" thing, if:

1 - there were an option to "unlike" or hate on a post - which there isn't.

2 - if "liking" a post actually did anything, like sort of post higher or give it front page status or something - which it doesn't.

I honestly hate seeing a quoted post with "Agreed!" - and I hate the times I've done it myself. But how else do you let the author of a post know that you totally agree with their point and like their post??? And what exactly is "like bait", anyway?

Hey Talon. I have been guilty? of saying "agreed" on a few occasions, but usually at least try to flesh things out a bit, by saying why, commenting on something else, or if you're a female member, mildly sexually harassing you. Also, if I do it the "classic" way, you know who it is who is agreeing with you! My posts are, admittedly, often on the lazy side of things. As easy to make as they can be. But the like button seems maybe too easy. I also noticed you can't retract your like if you hit it by mistake, which could lead to "I liked you by mistake" becoming the new "agreed". Sorry to say, my initial take on it is that I don't like it. Maybe it's because I just woke up. If there isn't too much blowback, and the feature stays, I'm sure I'll get used to it. Maybe even love it!

I agree that the "thumb up" should be gray by default and turn green after you clicked it, and turn gray again if you want to retract your "like" and click the "thumb up" a second time. That's how it works on article comments.

Well, I agree that it would be nice to see who liked your post, which I see you beat me to the punch on. I'm also thinking the ability to like one's own comment should be removed. I had to test to verify, so that like on my previous post is a lie. No cheating! Although, if those liking were visible, that wouldn't be necessary.

If it's possible to see who liked any given post, the ability to like one's own posts can remain. Consider the possibility to bully someone who has built a reputation of liking all of their own posts; we wouldn't want to miss out on that.

Might as well apply the Supporter bonuses here too, so that I can give myself 4 likes

Yeah, caught my lack of logic with an edit. Not fast enough though.
