I've never even heard of this game until now. Were people expecting a good score?

In all seriousness I had to hold back laughter when I saw this thread.

This just looked like the most generic IP ever and mediocrity really deserves to be critiqued.

It could be the best game ever though, who knows!

Oh good, I wasn't the only one, lol.

For a small studio project its pretty impressive, maybe your expecations were too high? I mean its a $30 game so its not like they pushing something very ambitious.

Maybe it will review at par with more hyped projects like Knack 2 and Yooka Laylee.

Also, a game like this is gonna look underwhelming with Mario Odyssey just being released as well.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

What does being a "small studio" have to do with it? Or being 30$?

Nowadays neither of those really affect quality all that much ...

I also didn't have high expectations. This looked mediocre since it was announced.

Right, quality and resources have nothing in common.

You're a funny guy.

They do, but its not exactly like this is an ambitious game. It's a platformer. And a generic one at that. There is an entire segment of the industry dedicated to making great games with small budgets. You can close your ears and cover your eyes but even in relation to small budget products it seems mediocre. I'm opposed to the idea that "I", or anyone else, had too high expectations for a game because it isn't Triple A. Especially when I didn't have high expectations.

Just stop there.

Games of all genres can be ambitious.

Nice fallacy.

I don't know why you're trying so hard to defend the game. Mediocrity should be critiqued no matter where it comes from. Not only that, but you're defending an indie game with backing from a major influence in the industry. That also brings into question double standards. So when a great game that happens to be an indie game is made it just happens tp be great, but when an indie game is mediocre it's a given because of it's budget?

Budget can affect projects. Can. But the indie community has created many platformers considered great, from ambitious games to repetitive ones. I never said platformers can't be ambitious, that would be crazy to say especially given Odyssey. Even indie games can be, and we see examples of that. But... an indie game with decent production values that sticks to genre cliches and lacks scope ... but still turns out mediocre? That is baaaaaad, and it's not because of a budget issue...

I love Super Mario 3D World despite it's small stages and relatively low production values. Yooka Laylee, despite having some issues maybe related to budget, was mostly a failure creatively. Etc etc etc

And again your entire premise is flawed because I didn't have expectations. The more footage was shown, the worse it looked, but I tried to stay neutral  before release. That was months ago, and I forgot the game was even releasing till today. Which is why I found it funny that my suspicions were correct.

I dont know why you're so keen on defending this game. I didnt say it was objectively bad or insult the  developers. All I said was that I found the games reception funny , and that it kind of confirmed what I feared would be the case. I can't talk from experience, which is why we're talking about reception and if its justified for an indie title. It could be great, ive concded that.

I just find your position on budget to be misplaced in this discussion, an excuse.
