surprised by 2700u's performance?

AMD is releaseing its 2500u/2700u Ryzen APU's (15watt TPD) soon and leaked benchmarks are insane!

Its crazy how power effecient these things are at low clocks.

How fast is the 2700u then?

Well its a ryzen cpu with 4 cores / 8 threads, with max clock speeds of 3.8ghz.

It does better than Intel's i7-8550U in benchmarks (Intels laptop chip from Q3 2017, which costs 400$+).

Too put that into perspective heres a 15watt mobile chip, beating a i5-7600k (base clocks) in a multi tasking benchmark (cinebench):

vs the i7-8550U:

But what surprises me is that this 15watt APU has 1.63 Teraflop of GPU performance.

The "switch" can use upwards of 18watts+ when docked.

Sony could basically do a Playstation 4 "switch" version with one of these!

I had low expectation for "next" gen with Playstation 5 ect, but this news with the Ryzen 2700u laptop apu, made me see things in a new light.

on the CPU side the gains with next gen will be gigantic, which could lead to higher fps, much better game physics and increase the number and behavior of AI partners and enemies

Don't expect the next Xbox to be called Xbox Two, more like Xbox 47,398 Cube W or whatever non-sense they will use to call it

So what would one of these cost?

Yep, pair the CPU cores from this with say a 10 tflop GPU and 16 GB of GDDR5X or GDDR6 in 2019-2020 and you'll have a console that can play games at 4K with a graphical bump over the current gen (better textures, lighting, physics effects, particle effects, AA, AF, etc.). This also makes a portable PS4 possible, if Sony decides to make a competitor for Switch.

Consoles doesnt need GGDR5X, GDDR6 or HMB. GDDR5 will be enought.

We're at the brink of 10 nm... keep calm and you'll see real performance gains come 2019/2020 :)

Game storage size ?

No it wont. Not for 4k it won't in a next gen console. Almost sure they will go for gddr6 due to the likely timing of release for new consoles

the die size of the 2700u is 210mm² in GFO's 14nm process, the PS4 launched with a 348mm² APU (28nm TSMC) and by now it's supposed to be about ~200mm² (16nm TSMC)

assuming similar yields and process costs it shouldn't cost much more than the PS4 APU does right now

Yeah, at this point great CPU jump is almost given - but what next gen really needs the most is significant GPU jump due to how big 1080p to 4K jump is compared to 720p to 1080p in this gen.

Given that PS4 to PS3 is 8x (or 10x, according to Sony), if we go by that and 4K, PS5 would need to be at least in 15TFLOPs range...personally I'd consider that sort of minimum for 2020 console.
