Damn, Switch is that close even though PS4 and Xbox One launched in the holidays and sold 2.0M and 1.8M in 2013? That means Switch is selling even better than those two consoles in the non-holiday months! Awesome!

and neither had as severe stock issues. the switch is just pacing behind ps4 and Wii worldwide and holidays havent even arrived.

remember yall, if nintendo meets 14 million this FY (resulting in 16.7m total for first 12 months), it will officially set the record for most sales in a console's first twelve months in the market.

Yeah, but PS4 in its first 12 months did 14.4 million WITHOUT any major game releases like a Zelda or Mario (which both came out the SAME year even.) For Sony, that would be the EQUIVALENT of Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us II coming out on launch within the same year lol. Can you even imagine that??? In 2014, the only major release was Destiny at the END of 2014. No big exclusives really until later. Only Nintendo would do something like this after just coming off of the Wii U because they NEED sales. It's like a full-on attack because of the disastrous Wii U "effect."

Would the Switch sell like this WITHOUT a Mario or Zelda??? Who knows but I think likely not personally. We all know PS consoles sell because they are media devices as well as gaming devices.

Note: Also, just for comparison's sake...on a monthly basis, how does the PS4 stack up so far next to the switch? Is it over or under 7 million worldwide???

In the US this year PS4 is slightly above switch at this point, we will see after October though. Worldwide is different because PS4 is MASSIVE in Europe. But yeah, definitely BOTW helped the switch and it was still on track to sell great before SMO. But the best first year ever is still the best first year ever, and the big releases were the way that Nintendo knew they would be able to achieve that. I personally don’t think switch will come that close to PS4 Ltd, and PS4 first year with such releases would indeed be even better than it was, but I don’t think you can undermine switch sales y saying ‘it’s gotten big games,’ because that is kind of the reason Nintendo consoles are bought in the first place I think.

Ps4 pro could be considered a failure, depending on how you look at it.

everything could be considered a failure depending on how you look at it.

Call me crazy but I was expecting this nintendo number to be more. I pegged it to be selling at around 350k-400k/month since its launch in the US.

They couldn't sell 350-400k per month if they didn't had enuf stocks obviously.

To me 2 million for an entire continent sounds very little. All you hear is how Switch is a breaking success, and yet its sales is only 10% of PS4?

I've heard reports that Nintendo increased the production to 2 million units of Switch per month, so how come they sold so little?

EDIT: Sorry if this appears as some kind of trolling, but to me it just felt like this latest generation of consoles jumped to big sales numbers much faster than we saw in the past, especially with the PS4. But perhaps I'm just a little rusty and out of touch with how the market works for console launches.

PS4 after first 12 months on market sold 4.8m, Switch sold more than 2.8m for 8 month without holiday season, so Switch will most likely end up around 5m for first 12 months on market.

Daaaammmnn.

Where's Colin Moriarty now?

Hes right though......Switch has been out 7 months.......Xbox One sold 2.6 million in 6 months in the US, and PS4 sold 3.1 million in the US in its first 6 montbs.

He is obviously not right, Switch for those 7 months was heavily constrained and yet need to have holiday season.

Switch for 8 months sold more than 2.6m and yet needs to have first holiday season, so most likely Switch will end up first twelve months on market around 5m, for comparison, PS4 sold 4.8m for first 12 months on market.

Eh, PS4 didn't had strong exclusives but had strong 3rd party support in 1st year, Switch has strong exclusives but don't have strong 3rd party support. What would PS4 sold without big 3rd party games (for intance GTAV and CoD) in 1st year, definitely not so great. In other words, it's comparing apples to oranges.

Amazing numbers. I'm eager to get a Switch and play it, the game seems simply incredible from videos and reviews I saw.

Since when the US is a continent?

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

No, having Mario & Zelda in its first year is more like PS4 having COD, GTA, FIFA in its first year, which it did.

Don't forget Destiny and Watch Dogs and Assassin's Creed and Battlefield!

It fails to push forward what needs in anyway? And it having no pointto exist in your eyes does not make it a failure...I am sure you meant no hard it was just an odd comment.

PS4 seems like a great console (I dont ownone myself, looking to get one soon), and I'm sure that it derserves all the success it has gotten.  However, to me the pro variant was completely pointless. Sony was and still is comfortably ahead than its competitors, and its not like the pro caused a huge influx of sales. It doesnt cause harm, but it doesnt benefit them either. Its just..... there. 1 in 5 PS4's sold being a pro seems sorta dissapointing to me. The PS4 would have still kept the monumental momentum, with or without the pro.

I tend to avoid thinking like that.... saying something is pointless simply cause it doesn't appeal to you. I do understand what you mean though.

The Pro was important for me. I already had a PS4, but I was getting a 4k + HDR TV. What the Pro did was scratch my slighter upper rez and HDR itch, while ensuring I add one new person to the PS family by selling my older PS4.

I doubt sony ever positioned the PS4pro as something to outsell the base PS4. It like the XB1X are niche products. They simply aren't meant for everyone.

Well.... My estimates were actually considerring the shortage of stock. Guess its a lot worse than I thought.

Yep AAA western multiplats are the primary system sellers of PS4.
